Evelyn Bullock

Harriett Evelyn Bullock, better known as Evelyn Bullock passed away February 12, 2014 at The Bridge in Longmont. She was 97. Evelyn was a spunky lady who made friends easily and stayed young at heart and young in her thinking. At age 90 she was still attending exercise class at Longmont United. She was always interested in what others were doing in their lives. She wanted to hear all the details about their families, their trips and took a genuine interest in these conversations with friends and acquaintances. Evelyn was a lifelong learner and took delight in the joy of learning. Evelyn was born on September 6, 1916 in Lyons, Colorado to Orel LeRoy and Louise (Bensel) Bullock. She graduated from the Campion Academy, a Seventh Day Adventist Academy, in Loveland in 1935 and attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska for one year. Then she returned to Colorado and attended Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, which is now the University of Northern Colorado. She graduated from there in two years and earned her Teaching Certificate. Thus began her forty year career as a teacher in the St. Vrain Valley School District. Her first job was at the Montgomery School in Lyons, near Rabbit Mountain Road. At Montgomery School she could walk to school from her home. There was a little swinging bridge that went across the river, so she could walk from there right to the school. In the school there was an upstairs and downstairs, and when there were enough youngsters, there were two teachers. The first four grades were downstairs, and the fifth through eighth were upstairs. There was a big ditch in the back of the school, and when it froze over, every noon recess the students would go out there and slide and skate. Evelyn would slide and skate with her students and they had a lot of fun. She taught twelve years at Montgomery School then she came to Longmont and taught the primary grades of second and third at Central, Mountain View, Columbine and Rocky Mountain Elementary schools. She retired from teaching in 1978 after forty years of teaching young children how to read, write and do arithmetic. Evelyn never married nor had children of her own so her classroom students were her children. She truly enjoyed the time she spent teaching and learning from her students. There were many things that Evelyn enjoyed doing. She loved gardening and is known for her green thumb at producing beautiful African violets. She was a farm girl and helped her Dad and brother feed the cattle on her parent's 160 acre farm just two miles east of Lyons. Also, Evelyn helped organize 4-H clubs in Lyons. Later in her life after retiring from teaching she joined the "Ramblin Roses" Red Hatters group made up of her teacher friends. She enjoyed the monthly luncheon get togethers and usually came wearing her sweet French red beret hat. Any activity that involved getting to see and visit with friends pleased Evelyn. Evelyn was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Longmont. She worshiped many years at this church and more recently at Vista Fellowship. She was a devoted believer and read the Bible daily. She attended Bible study groups and had many friends in her Longmont church and in her church circle around the world. In addition to her faith in her life, education was very important to Evelyn. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma MU Chapter, a professional teacher's society both locally and internationally. Her fifty-nine year membership of supporting the local scholarship fund for teachers furthering their education has made a difference for many women in the teaching profession. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Orel LeRoy and Louise and her brother LeRoy Bullock. She is survived by her cousin Orel Bullock of Washington State and her many former students and many friends who loved her dearly. Visitation will be 5-7p.m. on Tuesday February 18, 2014 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the Longmont Seventh Day Adventist Church 1712 Mountain View Ave. Longmont, CO 80501.
