Herman C. "Smitty" Schmitt III, 74, of Longmont, CO passed away peacefully July 28, 2013 at Longmont United Hospital surrounded by his family. Smitty was born on March 14, 1939 in New Albany, IN to Herman C. and Elizabeth (Drilette) Schmitt, Jr. Smitty grew up in Louisville, KY until he was drafted into the Army where he served from 1962-1967 when he was honorably discharged. Smitty married Donna K Musselman on December 15, 1963 in Colorado Springs, CO, moving to the Longmont area in January of 1964. Smitty worked 26 years for IBM, retiring in 1992. He was a volunteer police officer
for 46 years, helping to originate the Reserve Program in 1966. For the majority of those years, he was the Captain and Commander. After retiring from IBM, he started his own business, Smitty Does It, to do handyman work. Smitty was a member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling in his motor home, making stained glass, but most of all, spending time with family and friends. Smitty was preceded in death by his parents. Smitty is survived by his wife Donna, son Michael (Joy) Schmitt of Windsor, CO, daughter Kimberly (Paul) Gasser of Broomfield, CO, brother James (Marilyn) Schmitt of TX, grandchildren Ashlee, Mikey, Matthew, Cailyn, Garrett and Mitchell, numerous nieces and nephews and of course his beloved dog, Misti. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Herman C.
