Irene Greenwood

Irene V. Greenwood, 95, of Longmont, CO passed away April 16, 2014 at the Peaks Care Center. Irene was born on March 16, 1919 to Ed and Pauline (Sterkel) Horst in Berthoud, CO. Irene grew up in the Berthoud area on a farmstead south of Carter Lake. As a young girl, Irene traveled to Streator, IL to live and work with her aunt and uncle who ran a boarding house. Irene returned to Colorado in 1935, working for JC Penney and Draper Drug Store in Loveland. She moved to Longmont in 1941, living at a boarding house for working girls. While dining at Irish and Eves, she met Guy Beasley Hart, whom she married on June 10, 1945. Guy and Irene were very active in the Boulder County Fair and Rodeo beginning in 1946. They would travel to look for specialty rodeo acts and hosted many cowboys for dinner over the years. Guy died in 1960. Irene married Ralph Greenwood on June 28, 1965, in Longmont, he died on May 27, 1991. They owned and operated Ralph's Auction for 9 years and then The Years Ago Shop in Cottonwood Park, both in Niwot. She had also worked at Safeway, Wheelers, Ranch Wholesale and Big R. When her daughter Sondra was growing up, Irene was involved with PTA at Columbine Elementary, was a Girl Scout Troop Leader, 4-H leader, involved with dance and helped organized the Clover Leaf Riders. Irene enjoyed crocheting, sewing and crafts and was a member of Solver Spruce Rebecca Lodge. Irene is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Guy and Ralph, 1 sister and 1 brother. Irene is survived by her daughter Sondra Lawley (Bob) of Longmont, 5 grandchildren, Robert Lawley Jr. (Jill), Jon Lawley, Clinton Lawley (JC Law), Branden Lawley (Joy) and Lance Lawley, 14 great-grandchildren, Josh, Dustin, Megan, Leighanne, Randee, Mathew, Jaclyn, Lawrence, Travis, Colton, Wesley, Austin, Haaley and Andrew, 3 great-great-grandchildren Dominic, Braydon and Linzee, brother Gordon Horst (Rosie) of Thornton and sister Alvera Bashor (Lee) of Loveland. Funeral service 10:30am, Friday, April 18, 2014 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with visitation 1 hour prior. Interment at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
