William Mitchell

William "Bill" J. Mitchell, of Longmont, Colorado, passed away Sunday night, April 7, 2013 at TRU Community Care Hospice Center in Louisville, Colorado. He was 81 years old. Bill grew up in the Greeley/Evans area of Colorado and graduated from Greeley High School in 1950. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and served in Germany, France and England before being honorably discharged in 1954. Upon returning home, Bill met his future wife Leona "Darlene" Kembel the very night he got back to Greeley; they were married September 25, 1955. From 1955 - 1958 he worked as a civilian property accounting instructor for the Air Force in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He then moved to Longmont to begin working for the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, Colorado until retiring in 1987. Bill was a member of the Twin Peaks Men's Golf Association and a former member of the VFW. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, bowling, fishing, gardening, working in his yard and gambling in Blackhawk and Las Vegas, NV. He was a pitcher for his softball team who twice made it to the Softball World Series where he was named MVP one year. Bill was a generous and loving husband, father and grandfather; helping his family with whatever was needed and spending time with them when and wherever possible. He was preceded in death by his one true soul mate and loving wife Leona "Darlene" Mitchell in 1997; his parents; and one sister, Francis Kerns. Bill is survived by his children Kathy (Chris) Sullivan of Littleton, CO and Kenny (Sharalyn) Mitchell of Loveland, CO; his grandchildren Jessica (Blake) McBride, Nicholas (Anna) Sullivan, Emily Erlewine, Blake Mitchell and Brad Mitchell; his great grandchildren Alise and Donavhan McBride and another great-grandchild on the way; his siblings Dorothy (Ben) Eckhardt, Margie (Rhiney) Rohn, and Don (Bonnie) Mitchell; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. A visitation will take place from 4:00-6:00 PM Thursday April 11, 2013 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with family present to greet friends. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday April 12, 2013 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley, CO.
