Wayne Dozier Obituary

Wayne Demetre Dozier, 79, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, September 24, 2015. After battling kidney failure for a year and a half, he decided to end medical treatment and allow as many family members and friends to come and say goodbye before he moved on. His devoted wife, Mary, says that they both preferred to have his last days remembered for quality of life over length of life, and were thrilled to have so many people visit him at home while he was alert and communicative. Wayne was a restauranteur for 40 years, having his most notable success in Boulder, Colorado. Perhaps his most well-known restaurant, Sebastian's, embodied Wayne's love of life, his desire for quality dining, and his zeal to share those enthusiasms with all. Many may remember the slogan of the restaurant: "Everything in excess! To enjoy the full flavor of life, take big bites. Moderation is for Monks". This is a statement of Wayne's approach to life. He embodied that philosophy and inspired many folks to pursue their passions. In addition to Sebastian's, his other restaurants included Banana's, Pearl's, Arapahoe Ranch, Imperial Emporium, Murphy's Bar & Grill, Razzal's and the Roadhouse at Jacob's Corner. If you enjoyed a fine meal at one of these places, Wayne lives on in your heart. After riding the highs and lows of the restaurant business, Wayne pursued a lifelong hobby and became a professional photographer in Boulder, Colorado: Dozier Photography. His eye for detail, his knowledge of composition and lighting, and his usual perfectionist approach to any task, allowed him a successful and respected business for 18 years. If you have looked into the lens of one of Wayne's many cameras, you have been touched by his passion for excellence, and his energetic style. Wayne was always generous with his time, and sincerely shared his knowledge with anyone who wanted to learn, had a desire to "be the best", and would work hard to grow their skills and apply their efforts to the fullest. It is not an exaggeration to say that Wayne has mentored hundreds of people who enjoy productive careers inspired by Wayne's example and tutelage. Wayne is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary; his sons; Marc (Barb), Phil (Peggy); his granddaughters, Nicole and Corrie; his sister, Maren (Don) Johnson; his brother, Gene (Diana); his sister, Lana Lee (Jim) Norton; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held in the near future. Memorial contributions may be made to The Ayn Rand Institute at AynRand.org/support. My name is Don Myers. I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I met Mr. Dozier while dinning at The Flagstaff house. My favorite memories were at both his Banana's restaurant and Sebastian's. I saw him at a restaurant on 28th st and we talked about my favorite dish: In my old Kentucky home[hot turkey and cheese]. What a kind man and a Boulder Icon. He was a visionary for the boulder restaurant scene! Sincerely and respectfully, Don Myers [4TH GENERATION BOULDERITE AND 1 FOODIE!] Here is my e mail if his children would like to reach out [email protected]

My name is Fielding Darden and I worked as a daytime waiter at Sebastian's in the late 70's. I worked at Bananas at night.

I only knew enough about Mr. Dozier to know that he was on top of his game, and you didn't do anything stupid when he was around. LOL! I always wished I had gotten to know him better. But I was just a kid.

I am so grateful for the experience I got while working there, and I went on to manage several restaurants later in my life as a result.

When I left to move back to North Carolina, Wayne wrote me a letter of recommendation. I used it for many, many years, and I still have it to this day.

I stumbled across his name recently because I am planning a trip back to Boulder this August... after 45 years gone!

Best wishes to you, Mr. Dozier. Thanks for your contribution to life on this earth and to me in my youth.

Mary, I was so sorry to find this, this morning. I've been looking for you two for quite a few years. I want you to know how much I enjoyed the years I worked for you all at Sebastian's and in your home. You were always kind and fair to me and my children who also worked with me, and Jan the youngest, Mr. D. took a shine to her and it was mutual. We talk of you all so often.
I have saved the picture in my family album because that is the way I felt about him.
We have lost a wonderful person who was kind, humorous and so very talented. I'm so sad to hear this news.
If you'd like to contact me, I'm on FaceBook and my email is [email protected].
Condolences to you and the family.
Sincerely,
Lynn Rivarde
