Alice Monroe Obituary
Alice Elizabeth Atkinson Monroe passed away at home on June 19, 2014. Alice was born in Cold Spring, New York on September 2, 1929 to Alice Ryan and Walter Atkinson. She lost her mother during childbirth and her father at age 10. Even though she grew up as an orphan during the depression years, she managed to put herself through nursing school. She graduated from Vassar School of Nursing in 1951. Because it was against the rules for nursing students to be married, she was secretly married on June 5, 1950 to Roger Addison Monroe in Beacon, NY. She gave birth to the first of her five children the following year. Alice worked as an RN off and on while taking care of her family. In 1965, the family moved to Longmont, CO for Roger's job at IBM. Alice worked as an RN at Longmont United Hospital for a number of years after the move. Alice loved swimming, making ceramic dolls, bowling and golf. She made sure that she always had a swimming pool and spent many hours swimming with her grandchildren. In 1982, Alice and her family moved to Mead where Alice joined Guardian Angels Catholic Church. She loved being part of the women's group, going to Bible study and attended Mass every Sunday while she could. Upon retirement, Alice and Roger enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona where they could golf all year long. Alice shared her final years with her beloved Chihuahua Pepper, who never left her side. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Walter Atkinson, her daughter Judith Trevethick and one great-grandson. She is survived by her sister Helen Atkinson Dye, children Deborah (Gordon) Adamson, Susan (Kevin) Vendegna, Roger (Terri) Monroe Jr., and David (Marie) Monroe. Alice is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Joshua (Melissa) Corwin, Nicole (Mac) McQueen, Beth (Nathan) Lee, Jenni (Damon) Parrish, Danielle (Alvin) Sellmer, Andrea Vendegna, Michelle Vendegna, April (Andrew) Frick, Meredith Monroe, Patrick Monroe and Emilia Monroe. She is survived by twelve great-grandchildren. Alice's family would like to thank all the people at Life Care Center of Longmont for the care they gave her during this last year of her life. Mass of Christian Burial is 11am June 24 th at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Mead. Cremation at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Contributions may be made to Guardian Angels Catholic Church, TRU Community Care or the Humane Society. Visit to share condolences.
