Golda Backowies Obituary
Golda Mildred Backowies, 92, passed away at her home while surrounded by loving family on November 05, 2013. Golda was born on May 06, 1921, in Scotland, South Dakota, to John Davenport and Luella (McClanahan) Davenport. Early in her life she married William Stokes and had two kids in Nebraska before their divorce in 1948. As a single mother, Golda owned a Café in Walthill, NE, where she met and later married her husband of 35 years, Jack Backowies. They had four children together. Together they farmed until their move to Lyons, CO in 1960. In 1961 the family moved to Longmont where Golda has resided since. Later, she was a waitress, a factory worker for Gould Filters, and a volunteer for Elder Share and her Church. She was also a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. Golda enjoyed being with her family. She and Jack owned a cabin in the mountains where they spent many hours. She loved flowers, working in her garden, playing bingo, cards, and other games with her many friends. She also loved canning and was always happy to share some of her homemade jam and other canned goods. She was a loving and friendly woman who will be remembered by her frankness and missed by many. Golda is survived by her sons: Bob (Pat) Backowies of Mead, CO, and Tom (Ellen) Backowies of Dover, New Hampshire; her daughters, Barb Holderness of Riverside, IA, and Bonnie (Ron) West of Greeley, CO, as well as her 13 grandchildren: Mike, Teresa, Tracy, Brenda, Jimmy Jay, Ashley, Denise, Brent, Danielle, Brook, Kimberly, Brad, and Haley; 17 great grandchildren: Travis, Dustin, Britney, Brandon, Ella, Emmalee, Jack, Joshua, Lance, Ruby, Bella, Juan Jr., Max, Mathew, Jason, Brooke Lynn and Brody, 2 great-great grandchildren: Taylor and Lucas. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Jack, and her daughters, Dorothy Torrez and Donna Stokes, and her son-in-law, Louis Holderness. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 11, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Longmont. A private graveside service will take place at a later date at Foothills Gardens of Memory. Arrangements entrusted to Carroll-Lewellen Funeral & Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or TRU Community Care Hospice Service, in Golda's name.
