Katie Powell Obituary
Katie Lee Powell died July 13, 2013 at Sterling House in Longmont. She was 97 years old. She was born May 16, 1916 in Lyra, Texas to Henry Q. and Maudeline (Popineau) Bernard. She moved with her family to Harthorn, Oklahoma and then in 1932 to Fort Lupton, Colorado. Her "working life" started in Fort Lupton when she worked for the Powell Ready-To-Wear store (no relation to her future husband), to earn money for school clothes and books. On August 26, 1936 she married Vernon Kent Powell in Littleton, Colorado. Once married she became an enthusiastic and active farmer's wife, helping in the fields, feeding harvest crews, growing gardens and organizing social events. During the 40 years Katie and her family lived in the Rinn Community, she was always an eager volunteer and was often called upon to organize special events, fundraisers, and other activities for any purpose and for many groups and organizations. She had served as PTA president. The Rinn Community Methodist Church was the main focus of her and her family's lives. She was a long time Sunday School teacher and a member of the WSCS (Women's Society of Christian Service). Being farmers Katie and Vernon helped organize the Rinn Valley Grange, both being officers in the beginning years. She later held many offices and duties at the Grange district and State levels. She wrote a community news column for the weekly Longmont Ledger newspaper called "Kibitzing with Katie" and to her surprise, developed a local "fan base" from her popular column. Starting in 1957, when her children went off to college, she began working at Altman's Dress Shop in Denver and later became manager of their two new stores in Boulder, followed by working for the Nina Co. After retirement she and Vernon moved into Longmont in 1979 and joined the First United Methodist Church. Katie continued to be active in community and volunteer activities. She was a charter member and volunteer of the Longmont Hospital Auxiliary "Pink Ladies", and an activities volunteer at Applewood Living Center and Life Care of Longmont. Katie was one of the original organizers of PAT (Patient Advocacy Team), a group of Longmont women who spearheaded getting nursing home residents out for wonderful activities. When the Bridge assisted living opened, she led grand opening tours. Katie enjoyed many activities with Vernon. Dancing was one of their passions, they loved "toe tapping" music; they were a smooth and beautiful pair to watch on the dance floor. They also traveled extensively throughout the world for many years in retirement. Family was always her first passion and she seldom missed following the grandchildren's exploits including being a football fan for Eric, going to CU and Washington Redskins games; then for great grandsons at Longmont High School and Plano (Texas) High School sporting events, as well as for all the granddaughters dance and athletic endeavors. For the last ten years Katie has made her home at Tanglewood, developing many great friendships and enjoying independent living. She was preceded in death by husband Vernon in 1996, her parents, brothers and sisters Helen Maberry, Jesse Bernard, Sophie Cunningham and Henry Bernard and by a great granddaughter Haley Garcia. Katie is survived by two children Vernon Curtis Powell (Gloria) of Southlake, Texas and Sandy Powell Coyle (Les) of Carter Lake; five grandchildren Eric Coyle (Cyn) of Longmont, Jenean Coyle Wetterstrom (Kerby) of Longmont, Shonda Powell Laures (Jeff) of Plano, Texas, Trisha Powell Garcia (Sal) of Flower Mound, Texas and Monica Powell Prado (Justin) of Long Island City, New York; thirteen great grandchildren Rebecca Coyle Liebing, Scotland Coyle, McCartney Coyle, Navy Coyle, Forrest Wetterstrom, Sydney Wetterstrom, Annika Wetterstrom, Benjamin Laures, Zachary Laures, Brandon Laures, Sierra Laures, Bria Garcia and Jonah Garcia, one great great grandson Beau Liebing and one sister Ruth Hildebrandt (Everett) of LaSalle, Colorado. Memorial services will be held 2:00pm Monday, July 22, 2013 at First United Methodist Church. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church for youth programs. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
