Matt Whitehead of Fort Collins died the night of March 25, 2013 while vacationing with his wife in Belize. He was 33 years old.
He was born December 17, 1979 in Longmont to Steve and Sally Whitehead. While growing up he was involved in sports, music, church and developed a love for cars and all outdoor activities. Matt graduated from Longmont High School, class of 1998. He went on to attend Colorado State University where he met his lifelong friends and wife.
Matt married his best friend and love Kate on February 5, 2011 in Estes Park, Colorado. They made their home in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Matt had many passions in his life, the greatest of which was his marriage, family and friends. He was very spiritual and found his peace on the river or in the mountains of Colorado.
He was a natural teacher and his greatest gift was the ability to help others appreciate the beauty in all things.
Matt was co-owner of Alpenglow Sprinkler. The Alpenglow mission of "Promoting healthy landscapes through efficient water use" is but one example of his driving force to promote water conservation and protect our environment for future generations. He was a Certified Landscape Technician of Irrigation, a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor and an EPA Water SensePartner.
Matt is remembered as a loving and giving husband, son, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Kate and their beloved pets Elsie and Walter of Fort Collins, his parents Sally and John Barbe of Longmont, Steve and Heidi Whitehead of Fort Collins, brother Blake Whitehead of Longmont, sister Lindsey Whitehead of Carlsbad, CA, mother and father-in-law Susan and Jim Schlueter, brother-in-law Jed Schlueter all of St. Louis, MO, step brothers Cortland, Christopher and Joshua Trimm of Longmont. He also leaves behind a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held 5:00pm Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions will be used to create educational opportunities dedicated to fishing and skiing for those less fortunate. Other contributions will be donated to Save the Poudre and Trout Unlimited foundations. Contributions can be made to the MATT WHITEHEAD MEMORIAL FUND and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
