Helen Berkey Obituary
Helen L. "Gran" Berkey, died June 20, 2014 at Longmont United Hospital following a brief illness. Helen was born August 16, 1923 in Haxtun, CO to Ruben C. and Eliza M. Kautter. She graduated from Haxtun High School in 1941 and in 1946 married her high school sweetheart, James Berkey upon his return of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1954 they moved to Longmont with their two young daughters to start Berkey Plumbing and Heating. Helen was the bookkeeper and gofer for the company until they sold it in 1962. Later she worked several campaigns at the Longmont Sugar Factory and then went on to be a night production supervisor at Valley Lab until retiring in 1985. Together they enjoyed camping, fishing and especially taking care of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love of family and friends was her special gift. She was a common sense, straight to the point strong woman and that strength persevered to the end. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim and daughter Mary Ann Daley both in 2013. Brother John Kautter in 1993 and sister Elizabeth "Betty" Jones in 2000. Helen is survived by daughter Lynn (John) Stevenson, former son-in-law Vern (Judy) Martenson, Grandsons; Aaron (Shannon) Martenson and Corey (Julie) Martenson, Granddaughters Kimberly Daley and Carri Daley. Great grandchildren; Scott and Maddie Martenson, Tyler & Matthew Daley and Jami Daley. Special nephew, Casey (Dorothy) Jones and many great nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Contributions can be made to the or Longmont Humane Society.
