Erik Kauffmann Bonde, 90, of Louisville, formerly of Boulder, passed away Monday morning, April 8, 2013 at Balfour Retirement Community in Louisville. He had been surrounded by family in the days leading up to his death. A Celebration of Erik's life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2013 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 3485 Stanford Court, Boulder. A reception will follow. A private family burial will take place at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder. Erik was born in Odense, Denmark on October 19, 1922 to Soren K. and Else M. (Kauffmann) Bonde. He immigrated with his family to Southeastern Colorado in 1924 to farm sugar beets for Great Western Sugar Company. The family moved many times but eventually came to Longmont, where Erik and his two brothers attended high school. After high school, he enrolled at CU Boulder, but left to join the United States
, where he studied German to work in Intelligence. He was stationed in England and then, Augsburg, Germany after the war. Upon returning, Erik continued at CU on the GI Bill and studied Biology, having had a keen lifelong interest in nature. He eventually earned a Ph.D. in 1951 from the University of Chicago. He did post-doctoral work at
, and while in Los Angeles, met his future wife, Betty, singing in a church choir. They were married in 1953. Erik became a faculty member in the Environmental, Population and Organismic Biology Department at CU Boulder in 1955 and spent his career there. Erik was an expert gardener, working with an elaborate irrigation system using Anderson Ditch water. He and Betty loved to travel and they made many wonderful trips. He also spent sabbaticals in France, Germany and Semester at Sea. He and Betty sang in the choir at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and he also belonged to many professional organizations and published many scientific papers on his specialty, alpine plants. Erik is survived by his daughters, Karin Woolley (Charles) and Nana Jacquemard of Denver, and Amy Gould (Tom) of Fort Collins, grandchildren Nick Jacquemard of Washington, DC, Andrew and Alex Jacquemard of Denver, Hank and Elsa Woolley of Denver, and Anna and Erik Gould of Fort Collins, and his brothers, Preben Bonde (Gloria) and Dan Bonde (Bernice) of Longmont.
