John William Harrison Obituary
John William "Bill" Harrison passed away January 9, 2014 at his home. He was 94 years old. Bill was born on September 21, 1919 in Denver, Colorado to John Victor and Ruby Winnie (Wolfe) Harrison. He graduated from East Denver High School in 1936 and Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) with a bachelor's degree and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1942. Bill married Muriel A. Williams on March 28, 1942 in Longmont. Throughout his working life he was a veterinarian in general practices in Longmont; did consulting work in Bovine reproduction and pediatrics as well as practice appraisal and practice management; was a temporary professor at CSU and taught practice management seminars at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Bill was involved in many professional activities and organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association 1943- present, Colorado delegate for the A.V. M. A. 1950-1953 where he also co-sponsored two presidents in 1953 and 1978; Colorado Veterinary Medical Association 1948-present; CSU and Legislative Affairs committee 1965-1978; CSU Veterinary College Endowment Fund Committee 1978-1981 where he was the president from 1981-1982; Longs Peak Veterinary Association 1948-present; and was appointed by Governor Ed Johnson to the State of Colorado Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners from 1955-1961. While working, Bill also received many awards including the Honor Alumnus Award - Colorado State University in 1972; the Honor Veterinary Alumnus Award Colorado State University - College of Veterinary Medicine in 1972; the Special Service Award - Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Sciences in 1980; and the Colorado Veterinarian of the year by the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association in 1983. Bill loved the Longmont community and was very active in the United Church of Christ Longmont (First Congregational) from 1942-present where he served in numerous capacities as campaign co-chairman when building the new church building, as church moderator, pulpit committee, Stewardship committee, youth group leader, Boy Scout institutional representative, was a member of the board of worship and served on the church cabinet. Bill was a member of the Longmont Lions club from 1944-1980 serving as president in 1950; the Longs Peak Park Board from 1952-1961 where he was president from 1958-1961; Boulder County Juvenile Probation Department from 1968-1970; he served on the Board of Directors for Longmont United Hospital as Campaign Chairman from 1953-1963 leading the $1,000,000 building fund drive; Board of Directors for the St. Vrain Historical Society from 1985-1990; and from 1987 to 1991 served on the Board of Directors for the Hover Family Foundation, Hover Community, Inc., and Hover Manor, Inc. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Muriel in October of 2013; his son Stanford V. Harrison in 1955; his daughter Suzanne Harrison DeVault in 2008; his parents; his brothers H. Gene Harrison in 1980 and Paul Harrison in 1993; and his sister Helen Walsh in 1988. Bill is survived by his son Jeffery Harrison and wife Judy of Orange Park, FL, four grandchildren Jenny Baker, Russell DeVault, Josh Harrison and Jason Harrison, and two great grandchildren Kendall Baker and Elizabeth Harrison. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday January 28 2014 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions can be made to the .
