Evelyn BRUTON Obituary

BRUTON, Evelyn Passed away on September 17 at Cowichan District Hospital. Born August 10th, 1930 in Ellerslie, Alberta to Michael and Adeline. At the age of 18 Evelyn moved to Vancouver and worked as a stenographer for a local paper. She met Jim Bruton in Vernon and a year later they were married on December 22, 1951, shortly after they moved to Bella Coola where Jim worked in the logging industry. Five years later they moved to lighthouses where Evelyn learned to help with lighthouse work, to run a boat, fishing for extra income for the family. She also became teacher to her four children, instructing them in their schooling for many years. After working on various lighthouses for 30 years Jim and Evelyn retired to enjoy traveling, gardening and visiting with family. After Jim passed away Evelyn moved to Duncan where she became active in the community, especially enjoying the many crib tournaments she participated in and her garden. She will be missed by her family and friends, 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and 2 more on the way. A memorial service to be held on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2 pm at First Memorial Funeral Chapel 4725 Falaise Drive Victoria, BC. I visited Evelyn in the hospital just before she passed. I must say, it was the saddest thing I've done in a long time - to see her slipping away.

In life Evelyn commanded such power - she made her presence known, with her attitude, stories, and guff. Whenever she saw me she called me over... to knock me on the side of the head and tell me to give my mother less grief. :) But despite that, she was loved, and it was easy to quickly become a friend.

Her life story was impressive. I think she must've been a very progressive young woman. Home schooling her children in a lighthouse, and all the other work she did – it smacks of someone very intelligent. And after hearing many of her funny stories, I feel like I knew her family.

She's gone now... but I think if she were here, she'd tell me to quit moping about and go do something good with my life. I know she was very fond of helping people in need wherever she could. She loved helping people in third-world countries.

Farewell, Evelyn... and until we catch up with you, give 'em heck in Heaven. ;)

Some things we keep---like a best friend who passes away. We,the Hitchen family, have many fond memories of Evelyn,Jim,and family at the Sheringham Point Lighthouse. Evelyn always had the coffee on waiting to host a night of playing cards or board games. We could go years without seeing Evelyn, whenever there was an opportunity to visit, she would give us the red carpet treatment. Our surprise phone calls always brought happiness to our day, talking about old times and giving updates on our children and their families. Whenever we see a lighthouse, we are always reminded of the Bruton family.

Every day that I walk Chesterman Beach and look out at Lennard Lighthouse I think Uncle Jim and now, Aunty Ev, are winking at me. I enjoyed happy times staying with them and playing "on the rock". We'll miss her great smile, sense of humour and no nonsense attitude. She was a delight and will truly be missed. Our condolences to the family.

Evelyn will be sadly missed by me. I could always count on her for some good mothering. She could love you when you needed it, lecture you went you needed it, and straighten you out when you needed a good straightening out. Losing Evelyn is like losing a mentor, a role model and a wonderfully good friend. If she was all this to me, her family must truly feel her loss. My sympathies to all of her family.....hold her in your heart, she would like that. Use her wonderful wisdom to the end of your days, as I surely will. Also remember, she was true to life.......miss her presence but get on with life, or she will find a way to get you "on track" and back at it. She was good at getting people on track. She is not one that will ever be forgotten, she has made her wonderful presence on this earth to be felt for many years to come. She was truly a great person that will be missed by many, and most definitely by me.
