Jack MILLER Obituary

MILLER, Jack Smith (December 26, 1925 - March 11, 2014) It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Jack, who passed away on March 11, 2014 in Cowichan District Hospital at the age of 88. He was such a wonderful father and will be forever missed by his three sons, Michael, Curtis, and Scott (Georgina) and his two daughters, Jackie and Monique, 7 grandchildren: Sky, Amber, LaNae, Nicholas, Scott Jr., Anitra and Daniel, and 7 great-grandchildren: Isabella, Zoey, Jaxon, Michael, Kaylee, Ethan and Briar. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Engeline LaNae ("Lennie"), 2 years ago and his son-in-law, Nicholas Kauwell, 4 1/2 years ago. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he moved shortly thereafter to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he met his wife, Lennie. Shortly thereafter dad was enlisted in the Air Force as a Pistal Sharpshooter (Tail Gunner) where he stated that the pilot took a very sharp turn and he nearly fell out of the open back of the plane flying over New York City. Following that time the family began to grow very quickly and he then worked for Simpson-Sears and was transferred to Ottawa, Edmonton, Sudbury and eventually to Nanaimo, where he was became the Manager of Simpson-Sears (now Sears) and retired after working for them for 25 years. Our family lived near Lantzville (off Dover Rd.) for 20 years in a big, beautiful log house once known as "Konaway Lodge", with 18 acres overlooking the ocean. At the time this area was called the "sticks" - it is now a sea of houses. Dad was very creative person, he built his own family golf course on the property, a cabin at the beach and built his children many pieces of unique furniture which we happily took with us when we moved out of the house. Our parents moved to Victoria for awhile and dad worked for a time for Birk's Jewellers. Eventually they settled in Arbutus Ridge, Cobble Hill, BC. This was the perfect setting for them, having a golf course within the community, where they enjoyed many golf tournaments and dinners and met many great friends. This was also a time where dad's most favorite hobby was making fused stained glass - he made everything from bowls to jewellery and coverings for skylights which were just beautiful. His talent was unmeasured. When he wasn't home making stained glass or golfing, he and mom would take yearly trips to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for a couple of months at a time where he continued to make jewellery on the beach and sell it to the Gringos just like the Mexican's do! Dad had such a quick wit and a wicked sense of humour and that is what we will miss every day of our lives. Mom & Dad can now hold hands once again like they always did - may you both rest in peace. We love you xxoo A private family gathering will be taking place.
