Robert BINDOFF Obituary

BINDOFF, Robert C., Lt.Col., Royal Canadian Signals. Robert Bindoff passed away peacefully on June 24 2012 in Victoria. He was born in Beauharnois Qc on October 11, 1920, the only son of Albert Edward Bindoff and Lillian (Peirce). The family moved to Ottawa where Robert graduated from Glebe Collegiate in 1939. He joined the war-time class of the Royal Military College at Kingston Ontario, graduating in 1941. He went overseas in April of 1942, acting as aid de camp to General Andrew MacNaughton and serving in the U.K. and in Northwest Europe. He returned to Canada in 1945 and married his wife of 66 years, Gabrielle, on February 23, 1946. In addition to various postings in Canada, his post-war service took him to the United States, the Canadian Brigade in Germany and, with the United Nations, to the Congo in 1960, where he served as commander of the No. 57 Signal Squadron. In 1965, he was promoted to the rank of Lt. Col. and appointed C.S.O. at ONUC Headquarters. He retired from the military in 1969 and resided in Sooke and then in Victoria. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gabrielle, and by nephews and nieces in Central and Eastern Canada. He was predeceased by his sisters Edna (Cromwell), Marjorie (Howie) and Joan. Throughout his long life, he exemplified the R.M.C. motto: "Truth, Duty, Valour."

Major Bindoff was my Officer Commanding in the Apprentice Training Squadron in Vimy barracks in 1953 and in at least one situation I recall, he showed compassion and wise judgement. I had great deal of respect for him.

In 1952 Major Bindoff was the first Officer Commanding the Apprentice Training Squadron in Vimy Barracks Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He was an example to all of his "Boy Soldiers", and the staff who followed until 1967 when the program was completed. He will be remembered.
