1928-2012
Ariane Crawford, of Hornby Island, B.C., died peacefully early Tuesday morning, June 19th, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox. Born in 1928 to Andor and Eugenia Szentmiklosy, she grew up in Latvia, Hungary and Austria before immigrating to Canada after World War II.
Ariane raised three children with her husband Alex Crawford, and after receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia and Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa, went on to a career in public education. As a dedicated French immersion teacher, she taught for many years before retiring to Hornby Island in 1994.
Ariane was a much loved friend with a quiet sharp wit and great sense of humor. A master of languages, she was fluent in English, French, Russian, Hungarian and German. She loved to garden and cook and passed these loves on to her children. She traveled extensively throughout North America, Japan, Brazil and Europe.
Ariane is survived by her daughter Sheila, sons Andrew and Jim, granddaughters Shauna and Ella, her brother Andi and his family, and her former husband Alex.
Her family extends their deepest gratitude to all the home support workers at the Health Society, and to friends and neighbors who visited and cared for her during her declining years here on Hornby and at Eagle View. They also send many thanks to the caring staff and volunteers at Eagle View.
At her request, Ariane was cremated and no services were held. There will be a celebration of her life on July 31st at her house on Hornby Island. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hornby & Denman Community Health Society, 1965 Sollans Rd., Hornby Island B.C. V0R 1Z0. Thank you.
