Barry Thorndycraft Obituary

THORNDYCRAFT, Barry Barry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and passed away Thursday, September 22, 2005 after a short illness. He is survived by his loving wife Jean and step-daughter Starr (Cal), brother Murray (Marilyn), nieces Traci (Scott), Lisa (Bob) and Tom (Nadine), sister-in-law Anne and her daughters Pat, who took such great care of Barry at the farm he loved so dearly, Lynn and son Gary. In his youth Barry was an excellent hockey player who played with the Cincinnati Mohawks and Montreal Royals. He attended the University of North Dakota where he received his degree and became an NCAA championship hockey coach and then went on to coach hockey in Davos Switzerland. After a triumphant career in hockey Barry moved to Victoria and worked for Texaco and then went on to become a successful realtor. Barry will always be remembered for his wry sense of humour and his sports ability in both hockey and golf. A celebration of Barry's life will be held on Wednesday September 28th at 2953 Charlotte Drive, Colwood from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. We remember Barry with fondness here in Grand Forks for his coaching the 1963 NCAA hockey championship team at the University of North Dakota. He was a good man, an excellent coach, and is loved and respected by those here who knew him. We in North Dakota and those of associated with Fighting Sioux hockey express our sympathy to you over his loss.

Jean & Starr:

Our condolences to you at this sad time. Barry was Assistant Coach during my time at UND and was a mentor to me. I valued his critique of my play, and credit him for my improved performance. I'm sorry he was unable to attend the '59 teams' reunions so that we could renew old bonds.
