BRUCE, Beverly Irene February 8th, 1951 - November 1st, 2012. Passed away peacefully on November 1st at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital with her beloved husband Bob and border collie Ozzie at her bedside. Bev was predeceased by her father Fred Fairhurst, her mother Irene and brother Paul, she leaves behind her loving husband Bob (married 36 yrs), her sons Errol and Graydon Bruce of Victoria, her son Grant Jackson and his wife Lisa of Brisbane Australia and their children, Corinne and Alex. She also leaves behind her brother Gary Fairhurst and sister Pat Harkins, both living in Cobble Hill, B.C., as well as her many cousins and a couple of Aunts and Uncles in various locations on Vancouver Island. Bev grew up in Victoria and graduated from Mt. View High School, she met Bob in the early 70's on a blind date and they never looked back. They had a shared interest in sailing and sailboats and Bev's father Fred was a talented shipwright who helped them out with various boat projects. In 1976 they launched their sailboat Astrophel and lived aboard, in 1977 they sailed from Hawaii to Victoria as crew aboard a 38 ft. sailboat out of the West Vancouver Yacht club. Eventually, they settled in Boot Cove on Saturna Island, where they have lived for the last thirty-one years. They built their own house, cottage, a workshop for Bob and Bev's beautiful garden and raised two kids in this small isolated island community. Bev was the most wonderful mother that anyone could ever wish for, she was an active participant in the parents advisory committee all thru the boys school years. She never missed kids birthdays and always made sure that the kids were able to participate in activities on and off the island. She was a fixture on the Saturna medical scene as she worked with nine different doctors at the Saturna medical clinic over many years. She was instrumental in having a massage therapist and chiropractor available at the local clinic, when she wasn't busy at the clinic, she worked as a home care worker on Saturna, in Victoria and Sidney. She had a passion for gardening and worked professionally for several years on Saturna, as a landscape gardener with her friend Pam. Any spare time, was spent working in her own lovely garden, it was a sanctuary for her, especially during her last six months, when she was going thru chemotherapy treatments. Bob and the boys will miss her deeply but take comfort in knowing that if there really is a place in heaven, she will certainly be there. We would like to thank the nursing staff at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital palliative care unit for keeping Bev as comfortable as possible during her illness. Donations can be made to the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society on behalf of Saturna Island Rescue 911 ambulance crew. We invite family and friends to join us for a church service at St. Christopher's Anglican Church, 140 East Pt. Road, Saturna Island on November 17th at 10:30 a.m. A memorial tea will be held at the Saturna Community Hall following the church service.
