"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die"
Our deep sadness at Ian's death on January 7 was a reflection of our respect and love. He remained optimistic to the end - his outlook through most of his life. Ian was known as a gentleman and was a good example to our family as he was helpful, generous and brave. He lives on as we will carry his lessons with us always.
Ian was born in Cardiff, Wales. He served as Flight Lieutenant/Navigator in the RAF, including stints in Africa and SE Asia. Sheila and Ian then married in Cardiff and had three children. His success in a new career in sales and marketing and desire to see more of the world led to a job in Jamaica for four years. In 1967 the family moved to North Vancouver, where in later years he worked as a financial planner. Ian's next move was to Brentwood Bay, home for the past 15 years, including a term as president of their strata council.
He will live on in the hearts of his family: loving wife Sheila Hobbis; daughter Sue Stackhouse and husband John; son Michael Hobbis and wife Manon, grandchildren Odette and Bryn; daughter Louise McConaghy and husband Brian, grandchildren Ian and Andrew; brother David Westby Hobbis (UK) and wife Claire and family. Ian will also be remembered by relatives Leo Hobbis (NZ), Pam Gauvin (QC), Anthony Walker (Aus), Rosemary Dafforn, Judith Bray, Janet Hobbis, Jeremy Hardwick (UK) and their families.
Ian would want us to thank Dr J.P. McGhie at the Cancer Centre, surgeon Dr Alison Ross, and the nurses at the Palliative Care Unit, Saanich Peninsula Hospital. A celebration of Ian's life will be held at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Drive, Saanich on February 28 at 2 pm.
