VOGEL, Hendrika (Marijke) E. (nee van Ouwerkerk) June 6, 1928 - January 5, 2013 Marijke passed away peacefully in Victoria at the age of 84 years. She will be fondly remembered by her beloved husband Kees of 57 years, sons Chuck (Sandra), Bart (Barb), and Rafe (Sharon), her grandchildren Lara, Jan, Sara, Vanessa (Mike), Lauren, Stephannee and Neil. In the Netherlands, her sister Truud, sister-in-law Ruth, brother- in-law Wim, several nieces and nephews, and many good friends she made throughout her life. Marijke was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, was a survivor of the second World War and completed her studies in speech therapy. Marijke and Kees emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1957. She worked in various capacities as a speech therapist with the Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital, the provinces' Child Development Services and the Child Guidance Clinic of Winnipeg before retiring in 1985. She was a founding member and the first president of the Manitoba Speech & Hearing Association. In 1986, Marijke and Kees moved to Victoria where they both joined the choir of Metropolitan United Church. She also participated in the handbell choir of the church and the Bel Canto Choir of the Victoria Conservatory. Over the years, she provided many pots of soup for the "Out of the Rain" program, which provides shelter for homeless teens. In addition to her outgoing, friendly nature, Marijke was known for her love of entertaining, cooking, reading, knitting, sewing, and art collecting. She will be greatly missed. A celebration of Marijke's life will be held Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 3pm at First Metropolitan United Church, 932 Balmoral Rd, Victoria BC. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity would be most appreciated.

Kees and family, our sincere condolences for your loss. Marijke was a dedicated volunteer, loyal friend to many, and she blessed our church with her many pots of soup and creative handiwork.
