Hugh Davidson Obituary

DAVIDSON, Hugh Hanson May 27, 1930 - July 14, 2014 Beloved Uncle of Linda, Wendy, Barbara, Suzanna, Cynthia, and James; Great Uncle, (emphasis on the great) of Gabrielle, Allyson, Jennifer, David, Adrienne, Lisa, Diana, Jeremy, Sedona and Lexington; Great Grand Uncle of nine others, all of whom he knew and cherished. Predeceased by his dear sisters Anna, Janice, and Claire. How we will miss our champion of all the arts! The family wishes to acknowledge the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Hugh's other family in Victoria, all his extended family in Canada, the United States, Britain and Switzerland and his numerous friends and colleagues in arts communities across Canada. We mourn the passing of a passionate, brilliant man who created a life of magnificent variety and beauty in work, relationships and spiritual searching. He has been our guiding light. The family is grateful for the excellent care Hugh received during his last months of illness from Zig Hancyk, his doctors and the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Hugh's vast friendship network was a source of loving inspiration and connection for him. A service of remembrance will be held in Victoria, BC, at St. John the Divine Anglican Church on Tuesday, August 5th, at 2 pm, reception to follow. All of Hugh's friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Victoria Foundation Hugh Davidson Fund or an arts organization of your choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com

I met Hugh when he was Cultural Officer at the Canadian High (circa 19 79-80)Commission in London. Hugh in his numerous duties was instrumental in arranging wonderful concerts at Canada House London which gave pleasure to many. May Hugh's joie de vivre always remain a blessing to Family and Friends

Having been away from Victoria for several weeks, I was deeply saddened to learn about Hugh's passing only yesterday. He was a very special human being! I will never forget his kindness and generosity during the time that he helped me with a difficult (for me) project. My hope is that he will continue to be a source of inspiration to many.

In its history, CBC Radio attracted many of the 'good ones;' you were one of the very few "Great Ones!"

Dear Cousin Hugh,
Your mother Rhoda, my Grandmother Jessie's 1st cousin always welcomed my family to her home and th e country home in Davidson. We were to address her as Aunt Rhoda as our Gran and Aunts had moved to England. You entertained us at Christmas with music and lots of warmth. You seemed more like my 1 st cousin rather than 4th. You were always interested in our progress as were your sisters and Aunt Sheila. Recently you kept up with my husband Abbey's musical career and sent him frequent correspondence. Your music and artistry shall live on in all our hearts. God Bless you dear cousin . Love from Cousins Gloria Jean Campbell,Abbey Leon Sholzberg and our children.

Thinking of all the good times shared with Hugh in Davidson, QC with my mother Janet and uncle David. I now live in Germany and travel to Switzerland often, would love to connect with any cousins living in this part of the world.

Hugh was always so supportive of my circle of musicians, right from the early '70s when we were forming the Vancouver Chamber Choir, the Early Music Society and so many other musical organizations. And he remained a musical friend his entire life (and most of mine!) He always had a kind word and a little spur towards even higher achievement. And a compliment from Hugh was treasured, because he was someone who really KNEW what it was you were struggling for. We even premiered a choral piece of his... at Nini Baird's wedding! He's part of our musical history and that of all Canada.

Rest in peace, Hugh.

Hugh was a long standing member and supporter of our Take Heart Cardiac Rehab program. He joined us in 2006 and we will miss him. Hugh was always ready and willing to chat with new members and put them at ease when they first joined. He was a truly delightful individual and we were so fortunate to get to know him.

What a dear soul Hugh was, so kind, so loving, so full of the joie de vie. May he rest happily knowing he did it all with such finesse

Duncan and I send our sincere sympathy to his much-loved nieces and nephews. Hugh took a mentorial interest in me in the 1980s when I edited the NAC Orchestra's music notes and his notes for that orchestra's programmes were a delight. I am a English major but Hugh's vocabulary was a marvel to me: he introduced me to wonderful words like gallimaufrey ( a favourite!!).
He spoke of his colourful yet difficult upbringing in Anglo-Montreal and the courage of his mother in braving divorce in an era when it meant social ostracism.
He encouraged so many people, Costa Pilavachi among them. He convinced me that my doctoral work on Pelham Edgar was fascinating, and we had a wonderful trip up to Lac Brule to revisit old Edgar family (and Hugh) haunts. In typical fashion, he even specified the picnic menu -- homemade chocolate cake, chicken -- and we made and brought it all.
Hugh, rest in peace -- you loved the arts in your inimitable fashion, and the arts loved you.
With sincere sympathy,
Sandy Campbell and Duncan McDowall

I am so sad to learn of Hugh's passing. He was an exceptional person. I am grateful for his camaraderie, our meaningful conversations, especially during our sojourns to the cottage in Davidson, Quebec, and his way of making every person - including me - feel very special. You will be sorely missed my dear friend.
