In 1984, during the economic downturn British Columbia was in the midst of, Ian Stewart was chairman of the University of Victoria Board of Directors. He, with the assistance of Stan Dubas, the Deputy Minister of Health at the time, was able to convince the Board and bring them around to understanding why it was important to save a new program called Health Information Science. Without his support and leadership, the School of Health Information would not be here today. Over a thousand students who have graduated to-date owe their careers to what Ian did over 20 years ago. Thank you so very much Ian.

Pictures of Vancouver College 'class of 1950' almost always had Ian and I sitting side-by-side. Little did I expect to live close to him when I moved to Victoria in late 1973 and have him as my company lawyer. I always enjoyed working with Ian. I respected him greatly. He was "smart as a whip". Enjoyed his great sense of humour. - Mel Cooper

Ian's parents and mine were friends in Hong Kong many, many years ago. I remember still my mother telling me of his parents' death in what was believed to be one of the first aircraft hijackings. Ian and I were contemporaries at UBC, and served on the Student's Council together. We were for thirty years close neighbors in Victoria.
Ian was involved in numerous public causes in Victoria; perhaps he will be best remembered for his decades of support for UVic, where, fittingly, a sports complex bears his name. He will be greatly missed. Sandra and I extend our condolences to Gillian and the family.

Ian was one of those interesting people you meet early and never forget. We chatted mainly about local politics - I ran for Saanich Council and Ian for Victoria City Council. We were both elected. Lost touch over the years but good memories. Remembering the family.

I had the privilege and honor of articling for Ian and then working as his associate until 1978. Ian was an esteemed mentor and a father figure as well as a friend. I recall with great joy evenings on the Katie Ford as a guest of Ian's while courting my wife, Anne.
Ian was an outstanding and honorable lawyer,a natural leader, and all round great guy.
Thank you Ian for your mentorship and friendship.
Annie and I are deeply saddened by Ian's passing. We offer our sympathy and condolences to Gillian and family.
