Janice de Cunha Obituary

Daughter of Margaret and Randolph Caldecott, Janice was born in Edmonton, AB, but has called her beloved house on Cordova Bay home for the last 48 years. Janice lived to improve the lives of others. After obtaining a Master's in Social Work from UofT, she worked with people at Glendale and Tillicum Lodge, the BC Cancer Agency, the Memorial Pavilion at the Jubilee and the Lodge at Broadmead. She was a founding member of the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs and volunteered on the board of Coast Capital Credit Union among other positions. She was a supportive and proud mother and grandmother. She loved hiking, walking, golf, travelling, the arts, and above all, reading. If readers can be categorized as those who are learning to read and those who are reading to learn, Janice was certainly the latter: she was a voracious reader who read to be informed, for pleasure and especially to complete the crossword. She is predeceased by her former husband, Peter, her parents, and younger sister, Carolyn. She is survived by children, Ian and Andrew, grandchildren, Asia, Maxwell, Tristan and Emma-Lin, her brother, Peter (Christel) and nieces and nephew. Stoic till the end, it is hard to imagine her not being here. Celebration of life will be held September 18th, 1:30 pm at 4979 Cordova Bay Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greater Victoria Public Library or your favourite literacy charity.

We are so sorry to have lost such a vital, happy and kind friend. We spent many happy days with Janice on the golf course, at potluck meals and playing Bocce. She will be much missed and we are richer for her presence in our lives.

If I had to chose which of my fellow Directors gave me the greatest joy, help and constant support it would have to be Janice and our mutual friend Bert Hayes who himself has only very recently passed on. Their strong commitment to the best interests of both Staff and Members alike was their mutual aim.
We shared many good times together and their sense of humour and Janice's delightful laugh remain one of my strongest and lasting memories. My deepest sympathy goes her Family in their loss.

I built a stonewall courtyard around Janice's house in an attempt to quiet the noise of Cordova Bay Rd. But nothing could quell her riotous laughter from within. Truly one of God's wondrous creations, warm, generous, elegant and compassionate. It is a good day in heaven.

My condolences are extended to Janice's family. It was a privilege and a pleasure to work with her and observe her community dedication on the executive committee of the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs for much of the first decade of this century. She had been active in the founding of the CBA in 1976 and saving what became Cordova Bay Golf Course from being developed as a huge subdivision.
