SYME, John A. (Jack) January 16, 1919 - February 6, 2013 Jack passed away peacefully at Oak Bay Lodge at age 94. He was a 'son of Oak Bay'; he grew up living above the Oak Bay movie theatre and the Police station where his father John was police chief. He attended Oak Bay High School and later joined the YMCA and St. Columbia's Church, now Oak Bay United. He began working at the Jubilee Hospital in 1939, where he spent 41 years, retiring as senior purchasing agent. His proudest moments were shared with wife Ardyce, raising children Jennifer and Fraser and watching his four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren grow strong. Dad was a great supporter of many charities and amateur sport in Victoria, particularly track and field. He served on the Boards of OB United Church, Victoria Flying Y track club, and the OB Parks and Recreation Commission. He is survived by his loving wife Ardyce, and by Jennifer Barrington (Doug), Fraser Syme (Robin), grandchildren Tracey, Todd, Brian, and Ben, and great-grandchildren Michael, Marcus, Hunter, Montana, Austin and Kira. Jack was an avid gardener, and a hardworking and generous person who will be greatly missed by family and many friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, February 16th at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive in Royal Oak. Instead of flowers, please donate to the YMCA or Royal Jubilee Hospital. The family wishes to thank the incredible staff at Oak Bay Lodge, 2 Dogwood for their consistent quality care and loving support.
