John KIRKENDALE Obituary
KIRKENDALE John passed away October 16th peacefully at home overlooking Cordova Bay with his family at his side. He leaves his loving wife Ellen of 63 years, son John David (Lorraine), daughter Christine (Daniel), granddaughter Lisa, grandsonJohn Andrew (Tracy), grandson Jesse Daniel, great grandson Liam John David, sister-in-law Florence Buchan, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by brothers George and David, sister Rae, and parents George and Margaret. To all that knew him he was a good man. Ships and the sea were his passion. John served as a deckhand on towboats at the early age of 15 and later as a navigation officer on Corvettes and Minesweepers in World War 2. He later served as first mate on the Estevan and other vessels. John enjoyed building various ships and restoring them notably the 68 foot D'Arcy Isle. He also compiled a very comprehensive archive of ships in which he gained a vast knowledge of commercial vessels on the Pacific Coast. Our family would like to give a very special thank you to Dr. Bullock and staff. In addition, the Peninsula Health Unit and the amazing care and support of Erin and Bev. Also, the community health services staff, Victoria Hospice, and the Red Cross. No service by request of family. In lieu of flowers a donation if so desired to the Victoria Hospice or the Victoria Cancer Center.
