CALDER, John Mills (Bill) December 11, 1923 - June 13, 2013 "John Mills (Bill) Calder, patriarch of our Calder clan, has flown his last sortie. Born in Edmonton on December 11, 1923 Bill lived a full and adventurous life. He joined the R.C.A.F. at the age of 17 (a note from his mother made it possible) and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross piloting Beaufighters and Mosquitos during WW2. Post war, Dad flew Ansons and helicopters mapping the province and mineral searching. Coming home he would fly over the house dipping the plane's red wing tips so we knew it was him. Dad spent exciting years mapping Tanzania and Indonesia for C.I.D.A. as well as sharing his knowledge and wisdom at Vancouver's Science World, Sidney Aviation Museum and Sidney Historical Museum. The Sidney OBE'S coffee group was an important part of his weekly routine. Earlier in life he served as Past Master of Dunbar Masonic Lodge 145 where he is remembered with respect. Dad was a gentle soul who greatly loved our mother Jean (she predeceased him in 1992). Remembering him are his children, John (Heather), Diane (Rick) and Greg (Anne-Marie), his eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Also cherishing his memory are his brothers Hugh, Ted, and Brian and many loving nieces and nephews. We are forever blessed to have shared the life of the man we loved so dearly. The family extends sincere gratitude to Dr. Tamboline and the team of caregivers at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. A Life Well Lived
