Noreen Campbell Obituary

Noreen Campbell, age 71, died peacefully, with medical assistance, on the date of her choosing, at her home in North Saanich, BC.

Born fighting in Edmonton, Alberta, she was the youngest of three children (Wayne and Gary). Noreen was a nurse, a union supporter, an educator and instrumental in the opening of the Royal Jubilee's Foot and Leg Ulcer Clinic. Noreen was a spokesperson and advocate for Dying With Dignity.

She has been the steadfast partner of Clifford, and was the mother of two intelligent, independent daughters: Jane (Steve), and Mary (Pelle), and grandmother to Jonathan, Elsa and Emilia, as well as many other beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews and relations. She leaves a strong legacy of social justice that she has shared with her family, friends, and colleagues.

Noreen and her family would like to thank everyone that cared and helped her during her final years.

There will be a celebration of Noreen's life on Saturday, January 28th at 1:00 pm at St. John's United Church, 10990 West Saanich Road, North Saanich, BC.

In lieu of flowers, Noreen requests memorial donations to Dying With Dignity (dyingwithdignity.ca), End of Life Planning Canada (elplanning.ca), the BC Civil Liberties Association (bccla.org) or St. John's United Church (stjohnsunited.net).

I had the pleasure of working with Noreen off and on over the last 25 years and becoming a friend. Noreen embellished wound care. She thought outside the box in so many ways. Noreen was a stickler for doing things without to much fuss. Getting the job done well was paramount to her. She didn't suffer fools lightly and she made me a better nurse because of this. I will miss her pragmatic approach to life and will cherish all her quilting presents she found time to make in the wee hours of the morning. She epitomized the best qualities of being a nurse, wife, mother, grandmother, nurse and friend. Thank you Noreen for all that you stood for and the powerful legacy you have left behind. I am a better person because of knowing you.

Noreen was a mentor to me when I first decided to make a return to learning by enrolling in the Nursing Unit Administration course many years ago.I was scared stiff and her wonderful, supportive manner not only got me through it but so increased my confidence, belief in my own abilities and sparked an interest in furthering my education all the way to my Masters in Business Admin. She was a brilliant, thoughtful woman who left a tremendous legacy.

It is just like. Noreen to provide an educational learning session even in her time of dying. She was an excellent asset to the hospital on 2 royal, FLUC and the many contributions she provided to our burn unit and chronic wound management, she was awesome. So sorry to hear of her loss.

We did not know Noreen, but want to thank Noreen and her family for sharing Noreen's story. Her generosity in sharing her personal story has allowed my 87 year old mother to take the final steps in making arrangements to control her own exit. This is something mom has always wanted, given her terminal diagnosis. Reading about Noreen made mom feel validated and gave her hope. Thank you so much to a woman who lived well and took the time to think of others.

Sincere heartfelt condolences to Cliff, Jane, Mary and their families on the loss of Noreen. Noreen died with medical assistance on the date of her choosing at her home. She told me I won the lottery. I was thinking, What? You're horribly sick and you're lucky? Yes, Noreen felt lucky one of her conditions meant she qualified for Medical Assistance in Dying. Too many desperately ill Canadians who were also suffering intolerably do not qualify for MAiD under C-14. So she was thankful Canada has C-14 and she believed it will be fixed to meet the Supreme Court Carter Decision and go beyond. It was truly an honour and privilege to work with Noreen over the past three months to produce a series of videos. She was, amongst other things, an educator until the moment she died. She wanted others to learn from her journey. That is our hope as well.
Yes, I miss Noreen. I learned much from this lovely lady.

I knew Noreen for 4 short months. We were sister-volunteers with Dying With Dignity Canada. It was with great pleasure that I got to know her, see her with her loving family and learn from her pragmatic way of thinking. We shared a health care connection, talked medical and laughed together. I learned so much from her about how to live fully in the final months and days of your life, and how to die with grace when you are ready. I had the good fortune to help Noreen become an Honourary Raging Granny after a chance mention in an email recently. What fun to see how thrilled she was! She leaves a huge legacy by speaking publicly about her last days and her strong beliefs that Canadians should all have choice so they can die peacefully whenever possible. I will miss our lunches, our short talks and her sparkle. I hope I have the grace that she had. My thoughts are with Cliff, Jane, Mary and all her family. You are very special people too. Rage On, Noreen.

Cliff and family. Sorry to hear of your loss. Little did I realize what an exceptional person Noreen was when she was hired to help me establish the foot and leg ulcer clinic in Victoria. Noreen was always looking for new ways to assist our patients and to engage in research for new ideas. Am not quite sure she was over joyed when I introduced maggot therapy to the clinic but in her usual fashion she quickly became a convert. She enjoyed teaching anyone who would listen and many nurses and healthcare workers enjoyed her lectures and dedication. She will be sorely missed by all who crossed her path. Rest in peace Noreen.

Cliff, Mary, Jane and family,
Thank you..for allowing Noreen to be her tenacious self as she fought for her values and the rights of others. As a classmate, she challenged us daily as she questioned the why, where, how in every class. In later years, our paths crossed at conferences and seminars on the Island. We had a couple of great conversations in May at the reunion. She was so proud of her family...for your continued love and support as she pursued her goals. Noreen set the bar very high for the rest of us. If even one can champion her cause, it would make her proud. She is the class 66 Hero! As you continue your daily journey, may Noreen winning smile always bring a smile to you lips and a warm glow to your hearts. With love and blessings at this difficult time
