April 16th 1940 - August 12th 2012

Dawn left us peacefully on a warm summer night from the comfort of her home. She is cherished and will be missed terribly by her three children; Jodi Harding (Bill), Janis Cormier (Craig) and Mike Fimrite (Sue), six grandchildren; Katy, Christina, Colin, Sara, Jocelyn and Blake, her brother Jim Blake (Brenda) with whom she shared a special bond, her loving ex-husband Dennis (Susan), and many, many more family members and friends.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Dawn came to Victoria a young wife and here raised her children, helped to build the family business and spent countless hours in volunteerism. Shortly after arriving in Victoria she discovered that there was no volunteer bureau to connect willing people with needful organizations so she founded the Victoria Volunteer Bureau. Many groups benefitted from Dawn's considerable organizational skills including the Girl Guides of Canada, Saanich District Youth Choir and Parent/Teacher groups at the schools her children attended. She contributed to the 1994 Commonwealth Games volunteering in the positions of Chief of Administration and Coordinator of Pregame Events. Dawn was always available to drive and/or chaperone for field trips, camping excursions and multi-day bus trips with excitable (or homesick) choir members.

In recent years Dawn fulfilled her need to volunteer at the Central Saanich Senior Citizens' Association; she loved to spend time at 'The Centre' and, as usual, made herself indispensable in their office.

Dawn enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, especially Canadian football and any sports in which her children and grandchildren were involved. She could solve a crossword faster than she could write the letters inside the little boxes and always read a newspaper back to front. She was fiercely intelligent, proudly independent and very elegant.

There will be a gathering for Dawn at 7:00pm on August 21st at The Centre, 1229 Clarke Rd. Brentwood Bay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Central Saanich Senior Citizens' Association at
