Phyllis POLLARD Obituary

With regret we announce the passing away of Phyllis Jane Pollard at Victoria Hospice on November 19, 2017 following a several year journey with cancer. Phyllis leaves to mourn her, Aunt Rosemary, cousins Claire, Phillip, John and other extended family and friends. Phyllis was born in Victoria on December 19, 1932 and as a child attended Beacon Hill School in James Bay. In her adult life she graduated as a teacher and taught at St. Margaret School and other elementary institutions. After some years she left teaching and subsequently worked for the Provincial Government in the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum Resources, in the BC Public Service Agency and finally in the Ministry of Education. Phyllis was an active member of James Bay United Church and the Fairbank Calligraphy Society. She paid fastidious attention to detail and for many years did the calligraphy for the Memorial Book at Finnerty Memorial Garden at UVic. Phyllis was a reader and collector of books spanning a vast range of topics including poetry, world religions, history and music. Few could best her with word play or a turn of phrase and she took delight in the unconventional. In that vein, she was an unrepentant mouse-o-phile, with ornaments and mini stuffies of mice adorning her apartment, aka The Mousehole. Phyllis was also quite proud of her Cornish heritage and enjoyed overseas travel in her past. Those who knew her will miss her gracious demeanour, her perceptive insight and her engaging wit. Many thanks to close friends and staff who supported her so lovingly at Victoria Hospice. There will be no service at her request and donations may be made to Victoria Hospice Society or to the SPCA, in her memory.

Phyllis was my teacher in elementary school, a fellow calligrapher and friend. I will miss her wicked sense of humour and deep sensibility that can only be gained from teaching the young!

I was Minister at James Bay United Church. Phyllis had a very liberal theological perspective while I was more traditional in view. She always claimed l could make her so mad about what l said, but then she would have to forgive me when she heard I had done something kind to or with someone in the church or community. We came to appreciate each other's perspective.

I worked alongside Phyllis as a fellow organist in the 1970's and later in government. Lovely lady, may she rest in eternal peace.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Phyllis J. Pollard's passing. I remember her when I went to Beacon Hill School. We were in the same class together during Grades 1 to 4. In three of our school pictures we sat next to each other. She was quiet spoken and sweet. I never forgot her.
