Ruth LEVITSKY Obituary

LEVITSKY, Ruth "A family with an old person in it possesses a jewel. " (Chinese proverb) The family of Dr. Ruth Levitsky is sad to announce her passing on April 9, 2012 at Cumberland Lodge in Cumberland, BC. Ruth was born in Freeman, Missouri on March 16, 1913. She is survived by her stepdaughter Zoe Levitsky (John Clark) of Comox, BC and Joy Anderson (Michael Anderson) of Tubac, Arizona, three grandchildren and their families (five great-grand-children) in S. California. She married Homer Jones in her early 20's and they had Joy. A few years later they divorced and she began her graduate studies while raising Joy on her own. She began her career in a one room school in 1935 and ended it as a full professor at the University of Waterloo in 1978. Ruth was a Shakespearean scholar and she reluctantly retired from teaching at age 65. After retiring she and her second husband, Ihor Levitsky (deceased, 1984) moved to Victoria, BC. After his passing she spent her last years near her daughter Zoe in the Comox Valley, BC. She had a strong work ethic and set of principles. She pursued her academic interests into her 90's and published a book and grammar handbook in her 90's. She cared deeply for her family and friends. Ruth enjoyed travelling, history, literature, classical music, writing and having fun. She appreciated beautiful things and supported many efforts towards World Peace. If you wish to make donation to a charity in her memory, these are the ones she supported monthly: Habitat for Humanity, Canadian Red Cross, Project Ploughshares, Physicians for Global Survival, Care Canada and World Vision. 653429

I have Dr. Levitsky to thank for my abilty to write essays. As a student in her Shakespeare course at St. Jerome's as well as her Art of the Essay course, I learned from a master. I remember being honoured by a dinner invitation at her home when I was in my third year. Now I see that she was only a little older than my own mother, and I am glad for her family that they were able to cherish her for these many years. Consider me a grateful student who has never forgotten a wonderful professor.

Deepest sympathy for your loss, only time will heal. I hope you are doing Ok.
I see some of Aunt Ruths traits in my daughter, Shelby.

Dear Zoe & Family, sorry to hear of your loss. I Knew Ruth from Parkwood, and did her alterations & mending. Ruth was a real Gem & Sweetheart. When She was getting ready to move to Comox & needed to sell her things, I was fortunate to be able to purchase her little blue recliner for $100.00. I sit in it daily & it matches our new chesterfield. I will cherish my comfortable spot even more-so now. Please take good care. Gene & Jette

When I was hired at St.Jerome's College after graduate school, Ruth and Ihor "adopted" me and treated me like a son. I will never forget what they did for me. Ruth was my mentor and special friend. God Bless her. Jim Streeter

Whenever I think of the words grace, beauty, dignity, and love I will think of Ruth... I will miss her presence and her spirit to live a productive and giving existence... she was a teacher all her days here and taught me many things just knowing her. Goodbye Ruth...
