SMITH, Sydney May 1, 1925 - December 14, 2012 Sydney passed away peacefully Dec 14 at Oak Bay Lodge at the age of 87. He was born in Openshaw, Manchester, England, the eldest child of a family of two sisters and one brother. After graduation from Openshaw high school he took up an apprenticeship and became a fully qualified printer and remained so until retirement. At the age of 18 years and towards the end of WWII Sydney joined the navy and was on the mine sweepers based at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. In 1971 Syd and his then wife Joan, who has since passed away, decided to make the big move to Sidney BC. And being his namesake, he loved living in Sidney by the Sea. He worked for the Queen's Printer in Victoria until his retirement here. He was predeceased by his brother Ken, and sister Audrey. Survived by his sister-in-law Barbara, his sister Ida, and 1 niece and 5 nephews, all of England, and here, special friend Paisley. Sydney made some very dear friends in Sidney, and his English family would like to thank them most sincerely. And a very special thank you to the staff at Oak Bay Lodge for their compassionate care. A funeral service will be held Friday Jan 11 at 2:00 at the Saanich Peninsula Presbyterian Church at 9296 East Saanich Rd in North Saanich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
