Vladimir Pomajzl Obituary

Vlad was born in Czechoslovakia December 27, 1946 to Karel and Eliska. He was raised in Prague and immigrated to Canada in 1969 to continue his university studies. After obtaining an undergrad degree from the University of Alberta and a masters from the University of Toronto, the new engineer, having found his passion for running after coming to Canada, ran from the cold for Vancouver Island. He met his best friend and love of his life Catherine in Victoria, where they married in 1985 and together raised three daughters, Natalie, Valerie and Carolyn. Vlad was passionate about his work; working for the Ministry of Environment in Victoria and Nanaimo until he retired. An avid gardener, Vlad collected plants, especially palms, from around the world for his Salt Spring garden. The garden started in the 1977 when Vlad purchased an acreage on Salt Spring and built a small cottage. Over the next 3 decades, Vlad built the cottage into their dream home, growing his garden along side.

A private celebration of Vlad's life is planned. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Vlad's honour to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, Salt Spring Island, BC is appreciated.

I regret that I only knew you for such a short time, but your personality, energy, dedication and humour will remain in my memory much longer.

Dedication and commitment are but a few words I can use to describe Vlad. He was a true champion for the environment. Vlad didn't just work for the environment he lived it. For him it wasn't a job but a lifestyle that he captivated with passion and binding obligation for the protection our beautiful province. His knowledge and engineering expertise was well known throughout the Ministry of Environment and our client groups. His willingness and enthusiasm to debate environment protection issues is historic. He inspired others within MOE to reach for higher standards. I will miss you Vlad, as a colleague and friend.

Vlad was one of the first people I met when I started working in Nanaimo 10 years ago. He was so welcoming to the "newbie" on the floor and I will remember our many conversations about water and the Gulf Islands!

With deep condolences to Cathy and family, Vlad was a special mentor and example of dedication to protecting the environment, commitment to public service, and generosity of his time and expertise to his workmates and many friends. We will miss his ready smile, quick humour, and visits to his always evolving garden sanctuary on Saltspring.

Vlad had such a wonderful presence in the EPD office. He had an ability to dedicate himself 100% to his work, while also maintaining positive relationships with all of his colleagues, taking the time to ask about families, gardens, or whatever other common ground he found with people. He was an invaluable source of information and kindness, and will be very missed.
