MacLEAN, Walter Menzies October 10th, 1931 - November 8th, 2012 Walter was born in Glasgow Scotland and although he lived in Canada for almost 60 years, he had a lovely strong accent his whole life. Dad followed his father's career and although not a steam locomotive engineer, he became an engineer and retired as the Executive Director for Hospital Planning and Construction, Ministry of Health prior to the inception of VIHA. Dad worked diligently at ensuring hospitals around B.C. met the needs of the communities, overseeing construction of new hospitals and required upgrades. Dad was passionate about the health and medical care for seniors and upon his retirement Dad volunteered for 12 years as a member on the Board at the Lodge at Broadmead, spending many of those years as Chair. An active, avid outdoorsman who was a long standing member of the Sidney Lawn Bowling Club, Dad loved to bowl, socialize and work with other members to have the Club stand as it does today. He got tremendous enjoyment on the greens in summer; carpet bowls in the winter; and of course, the social times such as Robbie Burns dinner piping in the haggis. Dad was also passionate about travelling and living an energetic outdoor life and was a fixture on the Sidney waterfront walkways. Many of his holidays were spent hiking the many great, natural wonders of Canada, the U.S and Europe. His last great outdoor trip was this past summer hiking the Cinque Terre trail in Italy with his "Cheshire Girl", Jose. Dad was a beloved Father, Grandfather and friend to many and while we have a hole in our hearts with his passing, we cherish the many memories and values he has given to us. Dad loved his family dearly and enjoyed family celebrations and dinners, most recently arranging his own 80th birthday celebration last year with the whole family at Whistler. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Peggy; brothers Iain and Jim; first wife Helen (our Mom); and beloved second wife, Carol. He is sadly missed by his son Wally (Ann); daughters Kristine; Cory (Doug); Janis (Mike); and his two beloved granddaughters Brenna and Emma who adored him; his special friend and companion, Jose; and his many friends. The family would like to thank Dr.'s Hilary Wass, Alan Buckley and Jamie Papp for the wonderful care they gave our Dad, special Intern "James" as well as the nurse "angels" on 3N at the RJH PCC. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bodine Hall of the Mary Winspear Community Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney on Thursday, November 15th at 1:30 pm. No flowers please, instead donations to the Victoria Hospice "> or a charity of choice in Walter's name.
