Rodney Victor Kirkham
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rod on Feb. 29, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. Born in Victoria, he was predeceased by his father and mother, Harold and Vicky (Green) Kirkham and his brother, Harold Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joanne (Dawson); daughter Colleen (Steve), son Stephen (Shayne), and grandchildren, Kate, Lauren and Michael.
Rod obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from UBC and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He spent 28 years as a Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa and later Vancouver, mainly studying and documenting copper and molybdenum deposits in Canada and other parts of the world. He coordinated the production of a generalized geological map of the world and several world mineral databases. In 1998 he received the Duncan R. Derry Medal, the highest award of the Mineral Deposits Division of the Geological Association of Canada.
Rod was an avid fisherman and hunter both in B.C. and Ontario. He also pursued scuba diving with enthusiasm. He loved his sea front property in East Sooke and was happiest sitting on the cabin steps at night with his grandchildren exploring what he knew about the night sky and the world.
The family is grateful to Drs. Hamed Umedaly and Charles Scudamore as well as the excellent palliative care staff at Vancouver General Hospital, in particular James Cooke and Marylou Panziera .
A gathering of friends and family to honour Rod will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Aberthau House, 4397 West 2nd Ave. in Vancouver from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Callanish Society (http://www.callanish.org) or the Sue Harris Family Practice Research Fund (http://www.bcwomensfoundation.org/donate/sue_harris_family_practice_research_fund )
