BATES, Earl It saddens us to announce that Earl passed away due to natural causes on March 4, 2012. A good friend to all and a mentor to many, he will be missed. Earl was born in Calgary Alberta on January 23, 1918 to Fred and Laura Bates, (nee Stewart). He began his work-life as a bookkeeper for BA Oil. In his early twenties, he joined his father in Victoria to become a commercial fisherman on their boat, the Earl Roy. Eleven years later he ventured into the world of retail by becoming co-owner of a hardware store, and sometime later, a leather goods store. He eventually found his way into the lumber industry by taking administrative positions for BC Forest Products in Port Renfrew and Victoria Plywood in Victoria ~ where he worked until his retirement. Earl was predeceased by his parents and brother Roy. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Rita, numerous brother and sister-in-Iaws, nieces and nephews. There will be no service by request. 650821
