HORNE, Gerald T. 1926 - 2012 Gerald Thomas Horne passed away peacefully on July 30, 2012. Gerry was born on March 26, 1926, in Vancouver and is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Beatrice, and his sister Ida. He is survived by Irene, his wife of 63 years, daughters Marilyn (Ted), Jocelyn (Roy), son Ray (Fanny); grandchildren Christopher, Carla (Mike), Lindsay (Matt), Rhonda (Jamie), Daryl (Kristie-Lyn), Michael; great grandchildren Bryson, Jaxon, Alexa, Hailey, Alexander, Cooper, Natalie, Mckenzie and Benjamin. Gerry was raised in Richmond, BC. He enlisted for a brief stint in the Canadian Navy (Dec 1944 - Mar 1946), following which he resumed his education at UBC. He obtained 2 degrees at UBC: Bachelor of Physical Education & Bachelor of Education. His teaching career spanned 35 years – Nanaimo John Shaw High School (1950-52); Esquimalt High School (EHS) (1952-68); Ilorin Government Secondary School (1968-70) in Nigeria (through CIDA); EHS (1970-80); Reynolds Jr/Sr High School (1980-85). He had a lot of coaching success with his many high schools teams. He was involved in politics when living in Esquimalt and became an Esquimalt Alderman from 1963-1968. He travelled extensively and loved sports. He played Sr. B lacrosse (Richmond and Nanaimo), curled, golfed (member at Gorge Vale GC, then Uplands GC) and lawn bowled. He became an avid fan of the Phoenix Suns once he started spending his winters in the Phoenix area. He was kind, thoughtful, intelligent, generous – a family man who will be greatly missed by many. A private family service was held.
