HATCHER, Mary Hutton (nee Neilson) On April 21st Mary passed away in Royal Jubilee Hospital after a short illness. Mary was born in Coatbridge, Scotland and moved to Victoria at a young age. Attending Oak Bay High School she was always a Victoria girl. She met and married Robert (Bob) Hatcher in 1945 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For 16 years they lived, worked and raised their family in Winnipeg. The lure of the west coast was always there however and in 1961 they returned, eventually settling in Nanaimo in 1967. Many happy years were spent in Nanaimo enjoying life with a wide circle of friends. Their motorhome adventures were famous and the stories always brought a smile from everyone. Mary's knitting creations were valued by all who received them and the "knitting club" stories are numerous. Bob and Mary retired to Victoria in 1984. Bob predeceased Mary in 1989. For many years following Mary travelled extensively with friends. Despite numerous medical hurdles in recent years which limited her mobility, Mary was sharp of mind and enjoyed loading her e-reader, emailing and 'surfing' on her computer. She was strong, assertive and independent right to the end. Mary was much loved and will be missed by son, Tom Hatcher (Liz); daughter, Sheila Servais (Mike); four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Many thanks go to the wonderfully skilled, compassionate medical staff at RJH that made her final journey so peaceful. At Mary's request there will be no formal service. Flowers are gratefully declined.
