POWELL, William Shannon Bill passed away peacefully on September 28th, 2013 in Victoria B.C. in the company of his children. He was born on March 16, 1922 to Howard and Laura Powell on their farm near Rosetown, Sask. Bill was predeceased by: his wife Betty and his wife Eleanor; his daughter Marion Demong, her husband Roger and their children David, Laura and Catherine; his son in law Terry Cameron; Bill's sisters: Kathleen, Laura, Carolyn and brothers: Russell and David. Bill is survived by: his sister Anne; Bill and Betty's children: Russell (Yvonne), Marjorie (Terry) Cameron, Alan (Marina) and Howard (Jackie); Bill's grandchildren: Jason, Matthew, Christopher, James, Max, Luke, Tristan, Alexandra, Sam, Mike and Russell and great grandchildren: Saffron, Ivy, Charlie and Alyssa. Bill grew up on the family farm and attended Cleland, a one room country school, and Rosetown High School. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. While at university he met Betty and they married in 1943, shortly after their graduation. After a brief stint in the army Bill returned to Rosetown. The close relationship with his brother Dave, which had grown out of youthful hikes to Eagle Creek with slingshots, their .22 rifle and pockets full of dried apricots, developed into a successful 25 year farming partnership. In 1969 the brothers sold the farm. Bill and Betty moved to Deep Cove, BC and bought an apartment building in Victoria. Bill used the creative problem solving skills and practical abilities he'd learned on the farm to manage the apartment and rebuild their modest 1940s summer house into a unique and comfortable home. This provided plenty of room for visits from his children and grandchildren who joined him and Betty in fishing, boating, crabbing and enjoying the beautiful BC coast. Bill cared for Betty during the difficult and protracted illness which eventually took her life in 2001. Several years later he moved to The Peninsula in Sidney. There he again found happiness when he met Eleanor. They married in 2008. Their all too brief time together ended with Eleanor's death in 2011. In 2012 Bill moved to Douglas Care in Victoria where he remained until his death. Bill was involved in the social and community life of Rosetown and Deep Cove. He was a member of the Rosetown Elks Club, Dance Club and Gun Club and was a 4-H Club leader. In Deep Cove Bill was active in St. John's United Church and on community issues. Bill lived with dignity and optimism and faced life's difficulties with courage and humour. He made friends wherever he went. The family particularly wants to thank the caring and compassionate staff of Douglas Care Community and The Peninsula for their support in our father's last years. There will be a Memorial Service and reception to honour Bill's life at St. John's United Church, 10990 West Saanich Rd., North Saanich on Nov. 9, 2013 at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson's Society.
