Zoltan Roman Obituary
ROMAN, Dr. Zoltan 1936 - 2015 Dr. Zoltan Roman passed away September 30th after a short illness at age 79. He is survived by his beloved wife Eva and her children Eva and Monica and grandchildren Alex, Nicole, Michael, Indigo and Levi. Zoltan Roman was born in Miskolc, Hungary. Following graduation from high school and music conservatory in his native country he emigrated to Canada, where he studied at the Universities of British Columbia (B.Mus., 1962) and Toronto (M.A. and Ph.D. in Musicology, 1965 and 1970). He joined the Department of Music at the University of Calgary in 1966, and was appointed Professor of Musicology in 1976. After retiring in 1992 he was named Professor Emeritus of Musicology, and made his home in Victoria. Having earned a doctorate with a dissertation on the songs of Gustav Mahler, Professor Roman's scholarly work has been devoted chiefly to the biographical, analytical, editorial and bibliographic study of the lives and music of Mahler and Anton von Webern. Interdisciplinary studies, focusing on the turn of the twentieth century, claimed an increasing share of his time. He continued to present the results of his research at regional, national and international meetings of scholarly organizations in North America and overseas. In recognition of his contributions to musical scholarship, Professor Roman from time to time held elected positions in the governing bodies of such organizations as the American Musicological Society (Council), the International Musicological Society (Council), the International Webern Society (Board), and the Internationale Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft (Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Academic Advisory Board). Professor Roman edited several fascicles of Mahler's songs for the Complete Critical Edition, as well as a number of songs by Stefan Wolpe. He was the author or co-author of four books on Mahler and Webern. His studies have been published in such periodicals as the The Music Review, The Musical Quarterly, International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music, Muzyka, Acta Musicologica, and Studia Musicologica, as well as in collected volumes and congress proceedings. The family sincerely thanks the doctors and staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their compassionate care. At Zoltan's request there will not be a service or memorial. A donation for a scholarship fund in Zoltan's name may be made to the B.C.R. Music Teacher's Association, Victoria Branch, 1752 Adanac Street, Victoria, BC V8R 2C5.
