Donald Terry, age 86, a resident of Tuscaloosa since 1980, passed away on July 13, 2013. He was a former resident of Sheffield, Ala., for 22 years and of Decatur, Ala., for 13 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Vauline G. Terry; daughter, Jan Terry, of Bessemer, Ala.; sons, Gregg Terry, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Brett Terry (Malin), of Birmingham, Ala.; and grandchildren Matthew. Morgan and Grey Terry, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Hanna and Emmy Boge, of Birmingham, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James "Jim Possum" and Betty Terry, brother, Wallace Terry, of Decatur, Ala., and sister, Letha Terry White, of Vestavia, Ala., in addition to many other beloved relatives.
Mr. Terry graduated from Lawrence County High School, Moulton, Ala., and attended Athens State College where he studied accounting. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was discharged from the Naval District Intelligence Headquarters, Chicago, Ill., in 1946.
While in Sheffield he was active in Junior Achievement, Little League Baseball, and The Helen Keller Foundation. While in Decatur, he served as president of the Dixie Boys Baseball League and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Athens, Ala. In Tuscaloosa, he was active in the BellSouth Pioneers, serving two years as president.
He was also part of the Tuscaloosa Talking Book Program, Salvation Army, Lifeline and volunteer programs through Druid City Regional Medical Center. He retired in 1987 from BellSouth with 41 years of service. During retirement, he enjoyed driving and transferring vehicles for several local auto dealers where he enjoyed camaraderie with many friends.
The center of his life was his family and his relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ. He was ordained as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Sheffield, Ala., in 1958, and taught the youth in Sunday School. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, AL and, upon moving to Tuscaloosa in 1980, he served as a senior adult Sunday School teacher and deacon at Forest Lake Baptist Church.
Visitation will be at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel on Monday, July 15, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Tuscaloosa
Memorial Park on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Payne officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Forest Lake Baptist Church, DCH Cancer Treatment Center, or Hospice of West Alabama.
