Medford, Dorothy M. (Featured)
Dorothy Mae Medford, 69, of Cherokee, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015. Her visitation will be Monday, March 2, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee. Her funeral service will be Tuesday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Dwight Rivers officiating. Burial will follow in Harris Chapel Cemetery. Mrs. Medford was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Junior Medford; mother, Ruth Crider; father, James Crider; father-in-law, Dewey E. Medford; mother-in-law, Dorothy A. Medford (Dollie); and sister, Lois Huggins. She left behind her best friend and son, Nickie Medford; daughter, Laura Sellers; favorite son-in-law, Mark Sellers; her world, granddaughters, Candace Landers and Hannah Sellers; great-granddaughter, Riley Landers; sisters, Peggy Ogletree, Patsy Huggins (Otis), Patricia Peacher; brother, Owen Crider; and brother-in-law, Willie Huggins. Dorothy was the most selfless person, always giving of herself, her possessions, and her time. Dorothy started serving the people of Cherokee, Alabama, in 1989. She opened "Medford's Helping Hands," more commonly known as "The Shop," as a way of supporting herself, but most importantly, as a way to give to people and to show Christ's love. She would often do without, so other people would not be in need or have to suffer. People from all different walks of life and from many different cities and states came to "The Shop" to allow Dorothy to touch their lives by her giving nature. People often joked that "she would give the shirt off her back to anyone who needed it", but that statement could not have been any truer. She never judged anyone and always had compassion for everyone. Each child that entered "The Shop" always left with a toy at no cost. She loved all children and animals. The impact she made on the Cherokee community and surrounding areas was so great and so strong that it will never be forgotten. Her giving heart is credited to the deep faith she had in Jesus Christ, and the trust that God would always provide for her. She was obedient to God's will and always knew he would take care of her. Her family finds peace knowing that although we will miss her greatly and deeply, she is resting in the arms of her Savior and is reunited with her family there. The family of Dorothy Medford would like to thank each person who has generously donated to her and "The Shop" over the years. Thousands of people have given their possessions to her so she could continue to minister to others. We know that God will bless you for your kindness to our sweet Dorothy. Pallbearers will be Bob Waddell, Chuck Lansdell, Kenneth Pilkinton, Marcus Rutland, Dewayne Stout, Lee Terry, Greg Malone, Paul Norman and Robert Hans. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy wanted donations made to Cherokee Rescue and Fire Squad or St. Jude Hospital. An online guest book is available at morrisonfuneralhomes.com.
