Barbara E. McCorkle

Barbara Elaine Spurgeon McCorkle, 63, of Tuscumbia, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, after a brief illness and surrounded by her loving family.

Barbara was born Aug. 16, 1949, in Houston, Miss. The daughter of Geneva Bennett Sharp and Leonard Spurgeon, Barbara was a dedicated daughter, spouse, mother and grandmother. She married W. Joe McCorkle on April 24, 1970, in Colbert County and made the Shoals area her home for most of her life.

She worked as a beauty consultant and in retail for several years along with building and nurturing a home. Her children and family were her life and she cherished every moment with them. She was also a pet lover and a person who cultivated nature in its many forms.

Barbara was a member of First Baptist Colbert Heights. She is survived by her husband, W. Joe McCorkle; her son, Chris McCorkle; daughter, Jo'el Wasson and husband, David; granddaughter, Rebecca Wasson; and multiple family members in Mississippi.

Visitation is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Morrison Funeral Home in Tuscumbia, with the funeral service to follow at 3:30 p.m. Brother Bob Pittman will officiate and Marty Raybon will sing.

Thad Edwards, Stephen Minor, Jeff Wynn, John Smelley, John Sherrod and Birley Phillips will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Jamie Davenport and Terry Mitchell.

The family expresses special thanks to the CCU staff of ECM Hospital, especially Leah and Stephanie, and to Dr. Therese Lango and Dr. Robert Bailey.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Barbara's name to the Colbert County Animal Shelter.
