Thomas H. Burden

Thomas H. Burden, 97, of Leighton, Ala., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013. He was born Jan. 10, 1916, in Lawrence County and moved to Colbert County in 1943 and lived in Leighton for the past 70 years.

Visitation will be today from noon until 2 p.m. at Colbert Memorial Chapel with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Colbert Memorial Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lela Belle Burden; two brothers; three sisters; one son-in-law; and one granddaughter.

He is survived by his daughters, Thelma Dawson, of Madison, and Methel Posey (Wayne), of Leighton; his three sons, Cleavon Burden (Susie), Thaniel Burden (Joanne) and Garland Burden (Diana), all of Town Creek; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathleen Johnson, of Muscle Shoals.

Growing up in a family of farmers instilled in him a love of the land, so it was only natural that he became a lifetime farmer. He retired in 1988 and then gardened, raising enough vegetables to feed his family and neighbors.

He was a member of Abbie Baptist Church and Town Creek Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He is a past Master and a member of Scottish Rite, York Rite, the Shrine and the White Shrine Order of Eastern Star.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Mann, the Hospice Advantage nurses, and a special thanks to Eva Clausey, his personal nurse.
