Glenda L. Krewson

Glenda Liles Krewson, age 70, of Florence, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, after a year-long battle with cancer. She was born on May 15, 1943, to Wesley Z. and Lillie Gray Liles, of Greenhill. She attended Rogers High School and was a member of Greenhill United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Liles and David Liles; and a sister, Dean Liles Belew.

She is survived by her husband, Eric Krewson, of Florence; son, Jon Putnam (Shea); daughters, Joan Putnam Warterfield and Janet Putnam McRae (Glenn), all of Nashville, Tenn.; and a stepson, Jim Krewson (Jennifer), of Austin, Texas; sisters, Gail Birchfield (Johnny), Greenhill, Delora Hendrix, Anderson, Carolyn Threet (H.A.), Ethridge, Tenn.; and brother, Danny Liles, Kansas City, Kan.; granddaughter, Taylor McRae; stepgranddaughter, Teagan Krewson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Initially from Greenhill, Glenda spent several years living in Nashville, Tenn., where she raised her three children, before moving back to Florence to be closer to her large group of family and friends.

She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and devoted grandmother who loved to laugh, entertain and spend time with her family. She had an infectious sense of humor, a love of nature, animals and the Atlanta Braves. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

A bit of a tomboy, Glenda was a natural athlete and always ready for her next adventure. She had a brown belt in karate and fought in tournaments in her earlier years. Shooting hoops, spanking golf balls, or bowling strikes came naturally to her.

With her husband Eric, she hiked to the far corners of the Smokey Mountains. She twice hiked the grueling trails to the summit of Mt. Lecont and back in one day. No matter how rough the trail or how inclement the weather, she never complained or thought of quitting.

For the last 20 years, Glenda was a serious competitor in many of the traditional archery tournaments in the southeast. She won the Alabama State Championship twice with her wood longbow. Even as her age advanced, she always placed in the top three or four in almost every tournament in which she competed. She loved traveling to the tournaments with Eric in their camper and was designated as the official keeper of the campfire because of her love of watching the flickering flames while visiting with friends.

She will always be remembered and loved for her endless kindness, caring and thoughtful nature. Her sweet disposition and enjoyment of life left all who knew her with a smile.

A private graveside service will take place at Greenhill Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Woodruff will be officiating. Greenhill Funeral Home is directing. Pallbearers will be Johnny Birchfield, Dustin Bretherick, Chuck Liles, Herbert Plyler, Wesley Sinyard and Zach Sinyard.

Glenda requested no flowers or funeral gifts, but indicated that a small donation in her name to her favorite charity, the St. Jude Children's Hospital, would please her the most.

The family would like to thank their friends and extended family for their prayers and expressions of concern during this difficult time.

Glenda was a very special lady she was always smiling. We will miss her smile very much. The shoots will not be the same without her.

I have always felt honored by Glenda and Eric's friendships. Glenda's smile was one I searched for anytime I got to one of the archery shoots we all attended. I am deeply saddened by her passing and the emptiness that leaves everyone that loved her with. May God give her family and loved ones a special strength to get thru these times ahead without her. She will always be remembered with a warm smile and hug to her friends.

It was certainly a pleasure to have known Glenda and spend many Sunday nights after archery shoots sitting by her campfire hearing stories about her granddaughter and camping trips with her sisters. She was a special lady and will be greatly missed.
