The funeral for James Corbett Barber, 90, of Florence, who died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at the J.W. Sommer Rehabilitation Unit of Shoals Hospital in Sheffield, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with visitation from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Elkins Funeral Home in Florence.

Mr. Barber was born in the Ruskin community, near Waycross, Ga., to Edward Albert and Mamie Corbett Barber.

He was a 1938 graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in chemical engineering. As a cooperative education student, he began working for Tennessee Valley Authority National Fertilizer Development Center in Sheffield. During a 40-year career at TVA, Mr. Barber obtained a number of patents and co-authored the definitive book on the

production of elemental phosphorus by the electric-furnace method.

After retiring as staff chemical engineer from TVA, Mr. Barber founded James C. Barber and Associates, a consulting firm which specialized in the field of phosphorus technology. As a consultant, he authored 24 U.S. patents on phosphorus manufacturing that focused on energy conservation and environmental clean up.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 44 years, Frances Partin Barber.

Survivors include: three daughters, Ann Barber (Raymond) Snyder, of Knoxville, Tenn.; Gay Barber (Michael) Voss, of Cullman, and Beth Barber (Jeffery) Nabors, of Atlanta; two granddaughters, Frances Voss, of Cullman, and Corinne Nabors, of Atlanta; a grandson, Alexander Voss, of Cullman; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Partin, of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mr. Barber's civic activities include: longtime member and past president of the Florence Kiwanis Club; longtime member of the American Chemical Society; and longtime member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

In addition, he was an elder and deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
