Mrs. Velma Heupel Watkins, 92, of Florence, Ala., passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at ECM Hospital. She was a native of Lauderdale County and a member of Church of Christ at Macedonia.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. this evening at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, in Greenview Memorial Chapel, with Billy Warren officiating. Burial will be in Watkins Cemetery, County Road 158.
Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her husband, Homer J. Watkins; parents; siblings; son-in-law, Robert W. Hudson; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Watkins.
Survivors include her sons, Lee R. Watkins and wife, Luvinia, of Athens, Ala., William H. Watkins and Ralph V. Watkins, both of Florence; daughters, Stella W. Sherrod and husband, David, of Canton, Ga., Pat W. Warren and husband, Billy, Linda W. Daniel and husband, Walt, and Euna W. Hudson, all of Florence; grandchildren, David Sherrod Jr., Dr. Jon A. Sherrod, Paul Sherrod, Jeffrey Watkins, Anne Leslie Tompkins, Mark Sherrod, Dr. Stephen Watkins, Tony Watkins, Tracey Watkins, Bradley Warren, Robin Vaughn, Beth Guin, Emily Hudson, Karen Ball, Brian Watkins, SPC Nick Watkins and Benjamin Watkins; great-grandchildren, Blakely Sherrod, Anna Kathryne Sherrod, Sarah Elizabeth Sherrod, Kelsey Sherrod, Brandon Sherrod, Jonathan Sherrod, Paul Sherrod Jr., Olivia Sherrod, Abigail Sherrod, Kayla Sherrod, Matthew Sherrod, Reagan Watkins, Meghan Watkins, Aubrey Watkins, Connor Watkins, Kaitlyn Watkins, Ashley Watkins, Tyler Watkins, Candace Watkins, Erica Vaughn, William Warren, John Oliver Warren, Tiffany Watkins, Madison Guin, Brenden Ball, Christina Ball, Jaxson Watkins, Jake Watkins, Jaelyn Watkins, Torren Watkins, Charles Guin, Hudson Guin, Pride Tompkins and Warren Tompkins; great-great-grandchild, Makayla Watkins; sisters, Nellie Crittenden and Elizabeth Butler and sister-in-law, Flora Heupel.
Mrs. Watkins was a loving, nurturing mother, grandmother, mentor and friend who was devoted to her family, church and community. She was an avid gardener and was never happier than when she was in God's outdoors.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be her friends from Church of Christ at Macedonia.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Lyman Mitchell, Pam Hill and caregivers, Afton Boddie, Sara Chabera, Tammy Diviney, Lee Ann Scott and Shelia Sharp.
