Mr. William Glenn Shelton, 86, of Florence, passed from this life Friday, Sept. 13, 2013.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at 3 p.m. at North Wood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Reding officiating. The family will visit with friends at the church from 1:30-3 p.m.
Glenn served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during and after World War II in the Pacific Theatre. In his second tour of duty, he served as personal baker to Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his family at the U.S. Embassy in Toyko during the occupation of Japan.
He was a member of the American Legion and had participated in the Honor Flight program for WWII veterans.
He was retired from Reynolds Metals Company where he served as a supervisor in the cast house and later as a packing and shipping director at the Sheffield Can Plant.
During retirement he enjoyed driving school buses for the Florence City School System and playing golf with his friends.
He was a dedicated and active member of North Wood United Methodist Church where he served on the Prayer Garden and Columbarium Committee and on the Board of Trustees.
He is survived by his son, Dr. Beaumont Lawson Shelton and wife, Sheila; sister, Mrs. Tina Shelton Thompson, of Carterville, Ill.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special "niece", Robin L. Campbell.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Iola Lawson Shelton; his parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Creasy, Craig Campbell, Dr. Frank Wall, Max Roberts, Randall Trousdale, Eli Trousdale and members of the Homebuilders Sunday School class.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to North Wood United Methodist Church Prayer Garden Fund.
The family would like to thank Dr. Tim Ashley, Dr. Sean Rhuland, the staff of ECM-ICU, especially Leah Bush, the staff of Glenwood Rehabilitation center, especially Matt Clark, Margaret Seaton and Jamie Vickery and most especially, Dr. Robert Webb.
