Gertrude E. Holland

HOLLAND, Gertrude E. "Gertie," 97, of Williamsburg, passed away on June 18, 2010. She was born on June 10, 1913 to John and Eva Clowes, and was raised in Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 61 happy years, William Russell Holland; her daughter, Eva Ruth Lewandowski; her sister, Mattie Vaughan; and her brother, John Clowes. Gertie was a graduate of Matthew Whaley School. She loved dancing, fishing, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She greatly enjoyed being a homemaker, and was well-known and respected by Colonial Williamsburg for graciously opening her home (known as "Holland's Sleepy Lodge") as a guest house for hundreds of tourists. She is survived by her sons, William R. Holland Jr. of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and John E. Holland of Richmond, Va.; and her daughter, Doris H. Bing of Canton, Ga. She was also blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg.
