Herbert Burgart Obituary

Herbert Joseph Burgart, age 70, died at his home in Brodnax, Virginia. He was born in Saint Marys, Pennsylvania in 1932. He served in the United States Army and attended Long Beach State University and received his Doctorate at Penn State University. He was Dean of The School of Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia from 1966 to 1976. He was President of Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1977 to 1981 and retired as President of Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. Survivors include his children, Herbert Andrew Burgart and Nicholas Walter Burgart, both of Brodnax, Va., Joshua William Burgart of Port Allegany, Pa., Sarah Marie Dudley of Chelmsford, Mass., and Major Rachel Helena Lefebvre of Vacaville, Calif. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Nicholas Joseph Burgart, Edward Anthony Dudley, Rebecca Mary Dudley, and Herbert Andrew Burgart Jr. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Good Shepherd Church, Rt. 1 in South Hill, Va. on November 15 at 11 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held at Saint Gabriel’s Church in Port Allegany, Pennsylvania on November 18 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations can be directed to CMH Community Hospice, P.O. Box 90, South Hill, Va. Farrar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
