I am filled with so much regret for not being there for a man, who was there for me when I needed support.
Seeing this post of Jo Jo's obituary is a painful reminder of how precious our moments are with those who come into our lives. Jo Jo never knew how much he meant to me... how his compassion touched me when I was lost... How much I appreciated him...

Joe Gomer was the "Best of the Best" in the sales aspect of heavy equipment. He reached out to his customers with no questions asked......I have been a friend and long-time customer of J.L. Gomer Equipment. Joe got the job done on his end so that you were able to get your job done on your end. Many will miss you Joe.......I know I will. God Bless You !!!!!

To the family of Joe Gomer - I was shocked to hear of the passing of Joe. He was an outstanding gentleman. I remember when I first started in the excavation business and had trouble getting the equipment I needed. I had a friend tell me to go see "Joe." When I asked, "Joe who?" they replied, " Joe Gomer, you know J.L. Gomer Equipment." I proceeded to do so not sure of the outcome. Upon my arrival I had to wait a few minutes because he was on the phone and then was told I could go in. As I walked through his office door there sat a man with a stern look on his face. My first thought was what have I done? Joe gave me a handshake and asked how he could help me. I told him what I needed to get my new business going. He sat quietly and peered out the window. He finally replied, "I think I can help you. I will call you in a little while." Needless to say he called me in about an hour and told me to come sign the paperwork and get my equipment! This was coming from a man that hardly knew me but was willing to give me a chance. I can only say what a fine person he was. He believed that everyone should have a chance in life to make it on their own. Ever since our meeting 12 years ago only the oval stickers have been on my equipment. I know he will be truly missed by all that knew him. May God be with all of the family. He will surely always be in your hearts.

The Shumaker family will miss Jo Jo greatly. Especially my 100 year old Grandmother whom Jo Jo visited weekly with baked goods and good wishes in the nursing home. She looked forward to his visits every week and will miss him more than words can say. He was a special man and brought so much joy to my Grandmother. He will forever be missed and will be in our hearts as he will so many others.

Sandy, Wayne and I (Lorraine) were literally shocked when we read the paper on Saturday. We would always see you at the Skilligalee. When you did not come in lately, I asked the servers, and was told that you were probably spending time with the family and new granddaughter. I always thought Joe was shy, but a very nice person. It really bothered me because not only was he so young, but my father and brother both died of colon cancer. I know everyone will miss Joe, and I hope you are okay. It was very special to read that you two got married. Our prayers are with you and the rest of the family.

We are very sad to hear about the passing of our friend of many years. Whenever our band played a show at Shenanigans, he was always there. He loved the song "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy. We will always love and miss you.

Jo Jo visited my grandmother, Essie Shumaker at Heritage Hall every Sunday when he came to visit his mother. He always came with kind words and a heart of gold. He would always bring her cookies or cake. Every visit he held her hand, gave her a kiss, and even combed her hair. On her 100th birthday this past January, he sent her 100 roses and attended her birthday party as well. Jo Jo brought her so much happiness and she loved him dearly, and she told everyone about him she talked to. He is one of a kind and a wonderful friend to Essie. She will miss him and the family of Essie will miss him too. Our prayers are with the family.

Jo Jo was a generous man with a gentle soul. I only had the pleasure of knowing him for the past 4 years and feel very fortunate to have met him. It was always so obvious how much his friends meant to him and just as obvious that they, in turn, felt the same about him. Sandy and family----one thing you will always know is that Jo Jo left this world a better place than he found it because of his big heart and the many, many lives that he touched. God bless you all in your time of sorrow.

Donna, Jennifer and Tammy:
We are so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. You will always be a part of our family history what with living across from each other when the kids were small and having no one but each other to talk to. I always loved teasing Joe about his middle name. He was a good 'ole boy and we don't have many of them left anymore. He will be missed.

Joe meant alot to me and I have the utmost respect for him and what he stood for; dedication to hard work and people. He always saw the good in everyone and treated others with the highest respect. I made alot of transactions with Joe and everyone one of them was an agreement between gentleman. At times he would owe me tens of thousands of dollars and at other times I would owe him and it all was done on each others word. He assisted my business to grow and in effect spread his love to my family and employees. I will greatly miss his assistance.
Christmas time was always special at Gomer Equipment and was a time of giving in Joe's mind. Even during years I hadn't done much business with him, he routinely called me a week or so before Christmas to come see him "I have something for you". It was a tradition for my family over the last ten years or so to guess what sculpted animal was in the box that Joe gave to us. It was always so much fun and I will always think of Joe and miss him when I look at this collection from here on out.
There are so many things that I'll remember Joe saying one of which is kind of the way he conducted his life..."If you're complaining about the shoes you're wearing, look at the man that has no feet".
Joe was proud and marketed his business aggressively, but he humbly kept his giving to others rather quiet. I always suspected this and it is quite clear after reading some of these posts.
Joe was an excellent marketer and would always put those oval black stickers on any piece of equipment that he was involved with. I see those stickers all over the state and you can identify them by there shape and color from a distance. At one time we had so many of them around and on all our equipment I was seeing those black oval stickers in my sleep! I told an equally respected mentor that I dreamed one night that my wifes rear end had a little black sticker on it. ha ha
I'll miss my friend Joe. Tammy and family, my prayers are with you. The equipment industry has lost an integral part and Heaven has captured another soul.

To the Gomer family,
I just want to let you know what Joe did for us. After working as a heavy equipment operator for many years my husband wanted to explore the possiblities of us starting our own company. So the first place we went was to see Joe Gomer. Joe took the time to work with us and showed us many machines and trucks that would best fit our budget as well as what we needed for the type of work that we would be doing. He worked very hard on helping us get financing (witch for a start up company is difficult at best in this enconomy) Well we are still in business and doing ok, but we couldn't have even gotton off the ground without the help of "good ole Joe Gomer". So a BIG THANK YOU to Joe, for helping us live out a dream. You will be truely missed.

To The Gomer Family, Ruth Gomer and Edward,
You probably will not remember me at all, my name is Janet (Dagenhart) Bailey. Joe and I grew up together in Chase City, Virginia. His mother Ruth, Joe, Sherry and Edward lived across the street from me. Joe had a wonderful mother and sister and brother. I didn't know Sherry had passed. Joe's death came as a shock to me and my husband Roger. Roger had talked with Joe over the years and I guess the last time was about three years ago, since both of us are retired now. He would always tell Roger to tell me Hello. He was one of the greatest friends I had growing up, He was special and always will me in my heart.
Mrs. Gomer and Edward, my love and sympathy goes out to you. May those special memories of Joe remain in your heart forever, this way Joe lives on through you. To the rest of his family, I know you are special because Joe picked you. He had the biggest heart of anyone I had ever known as a child., so I know all of you knew how much Joe loved all of you.
It is hard to say goodbye, but at least he is truly an angel now with God. He will always be watching over all of us.
With all our Love and Sympathy

He’s in a Better Place!
He’s in a better place right now than he’s ever been before;
All pain is gone; he’s now at rest;
Nothing troubles him anymore.
It’s we who feel the burden, the sadness and the grief.
We have to cry and mourn our loss,
Before we get relief.
We know we’ll reconnect with him at the end of our life’s road,
We’ll see his cherished face again.

My husband and I came to know Joe through our dealings involving our excavation company. I know that because of Joe many excavation companies were able to get there start because he took a chance on them. There will never be another like him. One thing that always struck me about Joe was his concern for kids. I never went into his office that he did not ask me "How are those babies doing?", referring to my kids. I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I have no words to express the sadness I feel for the great loss that you (Sandra), and his family and friends have now. He has been so very good to our family, and to so many other folks that I don't even know about. Sandy, you were his rock and he was yours. How wonderful to have been able to share so many years together with someone you were truly meant to be with.

I did not know Joe was stricken with cancer. Me and Joe went a long ways back to our teen days and members of the same rock band. Also ran across him in Vietnam. He had ruined his ID card when he saved the life of a vietnamese girl. When he came to the door of our office I was overjoyed to see him. We were happy to make him a new ID card. I consider him among my old friends and am sadden to learn of his passing.
